Mapleton Families

Mapleton Families in the mid-1900’s

In 1911 (when Reuben was about eight years old) the BEGG family moved from a house near the Red River to the new one they build about a mile to the west, “the house across the tracks” that stands today.

In 1912 when a new Mapleton School was built in Mapleton it seems very likely that Reuben was among the first students who attended. ** MORE ABOUT MAPLETON SCHOOL HISTORY

Young Reuben Begg and his father

Young Reuben and his father (From family photo)

As a young man Reuben was away from home for a number of years (I’m waiting for more information from the family).

In 1927 his mother (Margaret) died. Reuben returned to the “house across the tracks” (Lot 5) to be with his aging father (Robert BEGG was now 67 years old). This would be his home for the rest of his life.

In 1929 son John was born, followed by Evelyn in 1931 and Beatrice in 1940.

The BEGG home became a haven of warmth and hospitality. It was a gathering place and there was many a Saturday night when family and friends came be to dance the night away to the tune of some good old time music, with Reuben on the fiddle and Sadie at the piano. Sadie was a life long member and past president of the A.W.C.A. and for nearly 70 years a loyal parishioner at St. Clements Anglican Church on the River Road.

In 1953 daughter Evelyn married Gerry BRACKEN, son of Violet Emma BROWN & Ernest Manford BRACKEN (b-1885).

In the ‘50’s I (Gary Still) well remember Bea teaching us kids (Me, Johnny, Dick, Eleanor, Ellen, etc) how to dance at the BEGG house when we were teenagers.

In 1959 daughter Beatrice married John STILL, son of Bessie CONROD and Thomas James STILL (1894-1980).

Reuben Begg Fiddling

Reuben Begg Fiddling

Reuben died suddenly in 1978 (age 76?) in the old home, west of the tracks, that he loved so dearly. Sadie continued to live there for a few years, but then sold it to granddaughter Patricia, and her husband Bill WILKINSON in 1981. The WILKINSONs built a new home on the site around 1987.

Sadie Begg's Poem

Reuben died suddenly in 1978 (age 76?) in the old home, west of the tracks, that he loved so dearly. Sadie continued to live there for a few years, but then sold it to granddaughter Patricia, and her husband Bill WILKINSON in 1981.  A line from a poem she wrote:  "that dear old house, that watched the trains go by" (Bea - I'd love to see the whole poem?). The WILKINSONs built a new home on the site around 1987.

On Sep 25, 1999 Sarah “Sadie” BEGG died at the ripe old age of 95, at her residence which was then at 315 Eaton Avenue n Selkirk. In her obituary her survivors are mentioned as follows: Son, John BEGG (Estelle) of Old England, their children, Robert, Betty (Walter), Judy, and Sharon, great-grandchildren Marilyn and Grant, and great-great-grandchild Skye. Her daughter Beatrice (husband Don) and Beatrice’s children Patricia (Bill) and David (Bonnie) and great-grandchildren Amber, Alana, Andrea and Destiny.
