William CORSTON was born Jan 10, 1819 in Evie, Parish of Rendal (Orkneys, Scotland). 

 

In the Service of the Hudson’s Bay Company
1836

 

On Feb 10, 1836 William entered the service of the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC). That summer he sailed to Moose Factory aboard the Prince of Wales and then transferred to the schooner Robin. For the next eight years he worked out of Rupert’s House as a laborer. In 1843-43 he was at Mistassini and Fort George.

1844-1851

 

From 1844 to 1851 William worked as a Slooper in the Rupert River District (Fort George and Rupert’s House).

 

Postmaster at Little Whale River
Marriage to Margaret McKAY
1851-1857

 

In 1851 William became a Postmaster at Little Whale River where on Aug 14, 1854 he married Margaret McKAY, the daughter of Mary BUNN & William McKAY (1793-1864). ** MORE ABOUT WILLIAM McKAY

In 1857 William became the Postmaster at Fort George in the Eastmain District. He was a Postmaster at Moose Factory for two years, then back to Rupert’s House in 1868.

 

His last years at Eastmain
1871

 

In 1871 William became the Postmaster at Eastmain where he remained the rest of his life.
In 1871 daughter Mary married Angus FARIES (1840-1899) in Eastmain, an HBC cooper in the Kenogamisee District.

 

In 1884 son John married Sarah (ESHKAPO) MARK at Rupert House, daughter of Elizabeth CHOLTON and Askowekapo MARK of uncertain origins.


In 1889 daughter Jane married James MORRISON of uncertain origins.

 

In 1893 he retired, and on Apr 6, 1898 William CORSTON died in Eastmain.

 

In 1894 daughter Louisa Isabella married Charles Hugh Munro GORDON (1866-1934) at Rupert House, an HBC accountant from Scotland.

 

In 1895 son James married Emily ELSON, daughter of Kweto Jane and James ELSON of uncertain origins.

 

In 1896 daughter Margaret married John ISERHOFF, son of Mary Ann MOORE and John ISERHOFF SR (1820-1865).

In 1897 eldest son William married Jane LOUTIT in Albany, said to be the daughter of Jane WYNNE and Peter LOUTIT b-1836) of uncertain origins.  ** Note: This needs more evidence – under review.

 

On Oct 13, 1902 Margaret (nee McKAY) CORSTON died in Rupert House.
