Leno Leo George DOWLER was born Sep 13, 1877 in Kingston, Ontario, son of Henrietta Augusta LEADER and Richard Armstrong DOWLER (1831-1903).

 

In the 1891 census Leo was 13 years old and living with his parents in Pittsburgh, Ontario (NE of Kingston).

In the census of 1901 we find the 25 draughtsman, Leo DOWLER, a lodger in the Calgary household of household of Nettie and Edward CLARKE (b-1860).

1904

Census of 1906 in the City of Calgary: Leo DOWLER, age 30 (born in Ontario); wife Mary, age 21 (born in AB) and baby son, Percy.

 

Census of 1911 in Calgary (428 Boulevard West): Leo DOWLER, Architect, age 30; wife Mary, age 26. Children: Percy (age 5), Etta (3), Denis (2) and Richard (age 1).

 

From the Book ‘Calgary’s Grand Story’ by Donald B Smith: Over eighty tenants occupied offices on the second, third and fourth floors. On the second floor on the 1st Street side, right at the south end, architect Leo DOWLER, originally fron1 Kingston, Ontario, established his office. He had just helped to de­sign Sr. Barnabas, a new Anglican church on the north side of the river, in the new Hill Hurst district. Several years earlier he had married into one of the oldest families in country, his wife being Mary LIVNGSTON, one of the fourteen children of Irish ­born Sam LIVINGSTON, an original homesteader, and his English Metis wife, Jane HOWSE LIVINGSTON. Mary DOWLER's grandfather was the fur trader Joseph HOWSE, a contemporary of David THOMPSON's, and her grandmother a Cree woman named Mary.

 

Census of 1916 in Calgary (428 Boulevard): George DOWLER, Architect, age 38; wife Mary, age 31. Children: Percy (age 10), Etta (9), Dennis (7), Richard (6), Frank (4), Mabel (2) and baby Marian.

 

Census of 1921 in Calgary (2306 15 St W): Leo DOWLER, Architect, age 42 (born 1879 in Ontario); wife Mary, age 36 (born 1885 in AB). Children: Percy (age 15), Etta (14), Dennis (12), Richard (11), Frank (9), Graela (7), Marian (5), Nora (3) and Dora (age 3).

 

Around 1936 son Percy married Mary Elizabeth JAMIESON, daughter of Margaret May CAMERON and Clarence Edward JAMIESON (1880-1956).
