American Revolutionary War or the War of Independence
1775-1781

In 1775 the first shots of the American Revolution rang out at Lexington (NE of Boston). This was the beginning of the war between the Kingdom of Great Britain and the United States of America, but gradually grew into a world war between Britain (the Loyalists) on one side and the United States, France, Netherlands and Spain on the other (the Rebels). General George WASHINGTON (1732-1799) was the Commander-in-Chief of the American Continental Army throughout the war

Gustave ISERHOFF was a German Hessian soldier and surgeon with the Brunswick Troops who departed Wolfenbutel, Germany, on February 22, 1776. On March 28 they anchored in Portsmouth, England where they were .mustered into the service of Great Britain by Colonel FAUCITT. On April 3, 1776 the fleet of thirty sails carrying the German troops set sail from Portsmouth and met the forty sail fleet of English troops at Plymouth also heading to Canada. Land was sighted on May 12 and Quebec was reached on June 1, 1776.

In 1781, the Americans won military and financial support from the French. Crucially, the French fleet secured the Chesapeake Bay against British reinforcements and the British forces under the command of Lieutenant General CORNWALLIS surrendered at Yorktown (October 1781), destroying any remaining British hope of eventual victory. Parliament voted to end the war on hearing news of the defeat.
