John ISERHOFF was born about 1820 in Waswanipi (Woswonaby), Quebec, the youngest son of Cree woman named SHABOWQUA and Jean Leopold ISERHOFF (1786-1820). When John was born his father was employed by the North West Company at Waswanipi. ** MORE ABOUT JEAN LEOPOLD ISERHOFF

Marriage to Mary Ann MOORE
1848

 

Around 1848 John married Mary Ann MOORE, daughter of Nancy THOMAS and John MOORE (1803-1898), an HBC voyageur in the Rupert River District. ** MORE ABOUT JOHN MOORE

 

A Voyageur and Canoe Builder with the Hudson’s Bay Company
1855

 

In 1855 John began to work for the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) in the Rupert River District as a voyageur (middleman).

 

From 1861 until his death John was listed as a Canoe Builder at Waswanipi.

 

In 1865 John ISERHOFF died in Waswanipi.

 

In 1875 eldest son John Jr. began a connubial relationship with Hannah ISERHOFF. It appears that Hannah was actually his cousin, the daughter of Caroline CHILTON and Joseph ISERHOFF (1815-1891), his brother.

 

 In 1876 daughter Mary Ann married Murdoch MACKAY in Waswanipi, son of Christina and Roderick MACKAY who was born 1825 in Ross-shire, Scotland.


In 1880 son Joseph married Elizabeth LINKLATER, said to be the daughter of Isabel MURRAY and Magnus LINKLATER (1825-1899) from the Orkneys, an HBC employee in the Ruperts River District.


Around 1880 daughter Louisa married John Gilbert ISERHOFF, son of Caroline CHILTON and Joseph ISERHOFF (1815-1891). John Gilbert was apparently Louisa’s brother-in-law as well as her nephew.

 

By 1887 son Samuel was married to Hannah NOASHET, and was working with the HBC at Waswanipi.

 

In 1892 daughter-in-law Hannah ISERHOFF died, and in 1896 son John re-married to Margaret CORSTON at Fort William, ON, daughter of Margaret McKAY and William CORSTON (1819-1898).

Census 1901: Widow Annie ISERHOFF (age 67) with her son Charles, (age 41) in the Albany River District. By this time son Charles had a wife named Sally and was an HBC employee in the Rupert River District.

 

Census 1911: Widow Ann ISERHOFF (age 74) with son Samuel in Martens Falls (Ogoki Post) in Ontario. By this time son Samuel had married a second time to a lady named Sophia (his first wife Hannah had died in 1905), and had a large family of his own.
