William KIPLING (KIPPLING)was born Sep 3, 1863 in Red River, son of Maria BEAR and George KIPLING (b-1838).

 

Census 1881: William (age 16) with parents in St Clements.

1886

 

On Apr 1, 1886 William KIPLING married Eliza BEAR in St Clements Parish. This from Manitoba Vital Stats. However, the mother of most of Williams’s children are indicated as Eliza CAMERON, daughter of Jane Mary FLETT and Adolphus CAMERON (b-1852).

 

Census 1906 (River Lot 101; Gilulo P.O.): William KIPPLING, age 42; wife Eliza, age 44. Children:  Harriet (age 16), Christy (11), Alice (6) and Minnie (age 3). ** As shown on the map below, Gilulo Post Office (Peguis) was located north of the St Peters Indian Reserve.

The Historic and Controversial Surrender of the St Peters Reserve
1907

 

On Sep 20, 1907, after extensive previous negotiation, Government officials met with the Chief and councilors of the Peguis Band. Opposition to the surrender was voiced by ex-Chief William ASHAM (b-1853).

By 1911 the St Peters Indian Reserve as such was gone forever. Most of the Band members had moved to the New Peguis and Fisher River Reserves north of Hodgson, MB. The area vacated was thereafter referred to as St Peters Parish.

Census of 1911 in St Peters Parish West (near the Dynevor Hospital): William KIPPLING, age 46, Fisherman; wife Eliza, age 49. Children: Harriet (age 20), Christie (15), Alice (9), Minnie (6) and Ruth (age 5).

 

World War I
1914-1918

 

On Aug 4, 1914 Great Britain (Canada on Aug 5) declared war on Germany and Austria-Hungary to uphold treaties with France and Belgium which were under German attack. This marked the beginning of World War I.

 

In 1915 daughter Christie married William Alfred PARISIEN in St Clements, the son of Sarah PRINCE and John PARISIEN (1852-1923). ** MORE ABOUT JOHN PARISIEN

 

Census of 1916 in St Peters Parish (Lot 98, RM of St Andrews): William KIPPLING, farmer, age 53; wife Eliza, age 55. Children: Harriet (age 24), Christy (20), Minnie (11) and Ruth (age 9).

 

November 11, 1918, Armistice Day (Remembrance Day) marked the end of the First World War.

 

Census of 1921 in St Peters Parish (Lot 98, RM of St Andrews): William KIPPLING, age 57; wife Eliza, age 59. Children: Harriet (age 29), Minnie (15) and Ruth (age 14).

 

In 1925 daughter Harriet married William Robert FLETT, son of Phoebe HENDERSON and William FLETT (b-1868).

 

In 1926 daughter Christie’s husband, William PARISIEN, died. Christie later remarried to Daniel COCHRANE, son of Mary MONKMAN and Henry COCHRANE (b-1851). ** MORE ABOUT HENRY COCHRANE

 

In 1929 youngest daughter Ruth married Thomas Edward CLEMONS in Selkirk, son of Mary Elizabeth SINCLAIR and Ralph CLEMONS (1874-1938). ** MORE ABOUT RALPH CLEMONS

 

On Nov 26, 1941 Eliza (nee CAMERON) KIPLING died in RM of St Andrews, age 77.

 

On Aug 24, 1943 William KIPLING died at the age of 79.
