On Mar 21, 1867 Alexander married Barbara LINKLATER in St Andrews, daughter of Ellen RICHARD and William LINKLATER (1820-1864).

 

On July 1, 1867 the British colonies in North America were united under the British North American Act to become the Dominion of CanadaSir John A MACDONALD (1815-1891) was appointed as Canada’s first Prime Minister. William McDOUGALL (1822-1905) became the Minister of Public Works, and he began negotiations to acquire Rupert’s Land from the HBC; surveyors were sent to Red River to prepare the way for an expected influx of settlers.

 

In 1867 son Alexander married Barbara LINKLATER in St Andrews, daughter of Ellen RICHARD and William LINKLATER (1820-1864).

 

On Oct 11, 1869, Louis RIEL (1844-1885) placed his foot on the surveyors’ chain to tell them their work was finished! This marked the beginning of the historic Red River Métis Rebellion.

 

On July 15, 1870 the Rebellion ended when RIEL’s Provisional Government accepted the terms of the Manitoba Act and Manitoba became the fifth province of Canada.

 

Census of 1870 in St Andrews (Lot 48): Alex KNOTT, age 32; wife Barbara, age 22. Children: Alexander (age 3) and Mary (age 2).

 

In July of 1875 both Barbara and Alex (of St Andrews Parish) applied for Scrip as husband & wife.

Census of 1891 in Grand Marais: Alexander KNOTT, age 52; wife Barbara, age 42. Children: Sarah (age 20), Annie (18), Charles (16), Jessie (10) and Edward (age 4).

In 1896 St Jude’s (Anglican) Church was built in the settlement at Grand Marais on two acres of land (18-18-7-Epm) that were donated by local residents Alexander KNOTT and his brother-in-law, George RUPERT.

 

In 1897 daughter Sarah Matilda married Alfred Edward THOMAS, son of Elizabeth SINCLAIR and Edward THOMAS (1841-1917), a Treaty Indian from the St Peters Reserve.

 

Census of 1901 in St Clements Parish:  Alexander KNOTT, age 64; wife Barbara, age 54. Children: Ann Frances (age 27), Charles T (24), Jessie (19) and Edward (14).  Also with them is "Lodger" George A FORSTER, widowed, age 48 (born Sep 30, 1852).

 

In 1903 daughter Jessie married Robert Alexander THOMAS, son of Charlotte PARISIEN and Henry THOMAS (1848-1927).

 

By about 1903 daughter Ann Frances was married to William CARVER (b-1875) of uncertain origins.

 

Census of 1906 in Balsam Bay: Alexander KNOTT, age 69; wife Barbara, age59.

 

In 1907 son Charles married Mary Jane IRVINE at Stony Point, daughter of Matilda ORVIS and William IRVINE (1866-1908).

 

In 1908 son Edward married Elizabeth PETERSON of uncertain origins.

 

Census of 1911 in Stony Point: Alexander KNOTT, age 71; wife Barbara, age 61. Also son Edward and his wife Elizabeth, (both age 22) and grandchildren (Ed;s kids)Humphrey (age 2) and Edith (age 1).

 

Census of 1916 in RM of St Clements: Alexander KNOTT, age 76; wife Barbara, age 66. Son Edward and his wife Elizabeth, (both age 29), and their children: Humphrey (age 7), Edith (6) and baby Violet (age 2 months).

 

On May 16, 1920 Alexander KNOTT died in Grand Marais, said to be 80 years old.

 

Census of 1921 in the Grand Marais area:Widow Barbara KNOTT (age 72) and her granddaughter Dorothy CARVER (age 15) are ‘lodgers’ in the household of Jessie (age 39; her daughter) and Robert Alex THOMAS, her son-in-law.
