Marriage to Margaret HALCROW
On Feb 21, 1867 James married Margaret HALCROW, in St Andrews Parish, the daughter of Charlotte KNIGHT & Thomas HALCROW (1815-1854). The witnesses at their wedding were Donald CUMMING & Henry HALCRO. At the time of their marriage, James was a 23 year old farmer from St Paul's Parish.
On July 1, 1867 the British colonies in North America were united under the British North American Act to become the Dominion of Canada. Sir John A MACDONALD (1815-1891) was appointed as Canada’s first Prime Minister.
Census of 1870 in St Andrews Parish: James DUCHARME-MONKMAN, age 28; wife Margaret, age 24. Children: Mary J and Sarah (both age 1).
Halcro Settlement in Saskatchewan
James MONKMAN is mentioned in an article in the Beaver Magazine. It places him in Saskatchewan in September of 1880. Actually, son Thomas James is said to have been born there in 1878.
In 1882 William and Henry HALCRO moved to Saskatchewan with their families and founded the actual Halcro Settlement southeast of Prince Albert and Red Deer Hill as shown on the map below.

Around 1918 son Joseph married Catherine “Kitty” BOUCHER, daughter of Sophie LETENDRE and Frederich BOUCHER of uncertain origins.
Census of 1921 in Red Deer Hill District: James MONKMAN, age 75; wife Margaret, age 72. Daughter Alice (age 38) and son-in-law William John LACEY, age 31 (born 1890 in Ontario) and granddaughter Nellie LACEY (age 4). ** It seems that LACEY may be an error and may actually be TAYLOR. Grandchildren: Edith MONKMAN (age 10), Roy MONKMAN (age 6) and Joseph MONKMAN, (age 3) (born 1918 in SK).
Daughter Mabel married Edward James (Ted) KANE from Ireland, son of Laura KENDALL and John William KANE (1855-1915).
Youngest son William Arthur married Dorothy Grace BALLENTINE of uncertain origins.
