On July 1, 1867 the British colonies in North America were united under the British North American Act to become the Dominion of CanadaSir John A MACDONALD (1815-1891) was appointed as Canada’s first Prime Minister. William McDOUGALL (1822-1905) became the Minister of Public Works, and he began negotiations to acquire Rupert’s Land from the HBC; surveyors were sent to Red River to prepare the way for an expected influx of settlers.

 

On Oct 11, 1869, Louis RIEL (1844-1885) placed his foot on the surveyors’ chain to tell them their work was finished! This marked the beginning of the historic Red River Métis Rebellion.

 

On July 15, 1870 the Rebellion ended when RIEL’s Provisional Government accepted the terms of the Manitoba Act and Manitoba became the fifth province of Canada.

 

In the census of 1870 James (age 20) was recorded with his parents in St Andrews Parish (Little Britain – Lockport area).

Around 1874 James married Elizabeth CORRIGAL in St Andrews, daughter of Eliza FIRTH and John Charles CORRIGAL (1816-1891) from the Orkneys of Scotland. ** MORE ABOUT JOHN CHARLES CORRIGAL

 

In 1875 both James and wife Elizabeth of St Andrews Parish applied for their Scrip

 

Census of 1881 in the Little Britain area: James McCORRISTER, age 30; wife Elizabeth, age 29. Children: John (age 5), Ann Harriet (4) and James (age 1).

 

In 1886 son William married Catherine WATT or WATTS of uncertain origins.

 

In 1899 son John married Charlotte Anne LINKLATER in Portage la Prairie, daughter of Nancy DONALD and James LINKLATER (1849-1935).

 

Around 1900 (before 1901) Elizabeth (nee CORRIGAL) McCORRISTER died.

 

Census of 1901 in the Lockport area:James McCORRISTER, widowed (age 48) in the household of William DONALD (age 32), also widowed.

 

On Sep 18, 1906 youngest son James married Jane Mary McLEAN in Winnipeg, daughter of Sarah DONALD & Finlay McLEAN (1861-1942).
