Canadian Confederation
On July 1, 1867 the British colonies in North America were united under the British North American Act to become the Dominion of Canada. Sir John A MACDONALD (1815-1891) was appointed as Canada’s first Prime Minister. William McDOUGALL (1822-1905) became the Minister of Public Works, and he began negotiations to acquire Rupert’s Land from the HBC. Surveyors were sent to Red River to prepare the way for an expected influx of settlers.
On Oct 11, 1869, Louis RIEL (1844-1885) placed his foot on the surveyors’ chain to tell them their work was finished! This marked the beginning of another Red River Métis Rebellion. RIEL began to organize resistance to the anticipated transfer of the North-West to the Dominion of Canada without prearranged terms.
On July 15,1870 Manitoba became the fifth province of Canada, the Canadian Government having acquired the territory previously governed by the HBC. The Rebellion was essentially over.
Census of 1870 in St Norbert: Isaie PARISIEN, age 29; wife Charlotte, age 26. Children: Jean (age 7), Marie (5) and Patrice (age 2).
In 1875 Isaic (of St Norbert Parish) claimed Scrip for himself & Catherine, and for their children: Jean Isaic, Marie Josephine and Patrice.
Census of 1881 in St Norbert: Isaie PARISIEN, age 40; Charlotte, age 40. Children: Jean (age 18), Marie (15), Patrice (10), Veronique (8), Modeste (6) and Louise Anne (age 4).
In 1887 daughter Marie Josephine married Charles CARDINAL in St Norbert, son of Francoise SAYER & Jeremie CARDINAL (1842-1901).
In 1888 daughter Veronique married in St Norbert to Charles HERMAN (1860-1899) from Denmark. Charles HERMAN died in 1899, and Veronique re-married to her half-cousin, Pascal PARISIEN in St Norbert, son of Catherine COURCHENE and Pascal PARISIEN SR (b-1830).
Around 1890 eldest son Jean (John) married Suzanne RACETTE of uncertain origins.
Census of 1891 in St Norbert: Isaic PARISIEN, age 48; wife Charlotte, age 32. Children: Patrice (age 21), Louise Anne (13), Olive (7) and Hyacinthe (age 3).
In 1894 son Patrice marriedLouise Anne (nee CARDINAL) HAMELIN in St Norbert, daughter of Francoise SAYIS aka SAYER & Jeremie CARDINAL (1842-1901). Louise was the widow of Joseph HAMELIN (1870-1890). She was a sister of his brother-in-law, Charles CARDINAL.
In 1895 daughter Marie Louise married Charles OIG in St Norbert, son of Fanny HALCROW and Johnny OIG (1817-1889). ** MORE ABOUT JOHNNY OIG
Isaic died, probably around 1898.
Census of 1901 in St Norbert: Widow Charlotte PARISIEN, age 50, and son Hyacinthe, age 13.
Census of 1906 in St Norbert: Widow Charlotte PARISIEN, age 65; son Hyacinthe, age 18. Next-door is daughter Marie married to Charles CARDINAL.
In 1911 youngest son Francois Hyacinthe married Veronique Henriette SAYIS or SAIS in St Norbert, daughter of Marie PARISIEN & Francois SAYIS (b-1852).
