ALEXANDER THADDEUS (1892-1978+) (Last Updated: May 11, 2017)
Alexander James THADDEUS was born around 1892 in the Fisher River Reserve, son of Jennie (Jeanne) and Peter (WAKEMOWKAPOW or OO-KE-MA-KI-POW) aka THADDIUS (1855-1936).
Mary Jane COCHRANE born on Feb 9, 1896 in Fisher Bay, daughter of Bertha HAMILTON and William COCHRANE (1869-1900). In 1900 her father (William COCHRANE) died in Fisher River and in the census of 1901 Mary Jane (age 9) was recorded there with her widowed mother.
In 1903 Mary Jane’s widowed mother (Bertha HAMILTON) remarried to Thomas DAHL in St Clements Parish (Red River), son of Letitia Eliza BIRSTON & Alexander DAHL (b-1846).
In 1906 and 1911 Alex THADDEUS’ parents (Jennie and Peter THADDEUS) were recorded in Fisher River, but no children were recorded with them. Alex would have been about 14 years old at this point. We do known that Alex’s sisters, Sarah THADDEUS (age 18) and Lydia THADDEUS (age 13) were recorded as a pupils in the Brandon Residential School that year.
In the 1911 census in the Fisher River Reserve, Mary Jane COCHRANE (age 15) was recorded with her mother (Bertha) and her step-father, Thomas DAHL. In the same census Alex’s parents (Jennie & Peter THADDEUS) were also recorded there. However, Alex, who would have been about 19 years old cannot be found anywhere in this census either.

Census of 1916 in the Fisher River Reserve: Alexander THADDEUS, Cree fisherman (age 24) and his Cree wife Mary Jane, age 21 (b-1895). In the next household are Alex’s parents, Peter OO-KE-MA-KI-POW, Cree fisherman; age 55 (b-1861) and his Cree wife Jeanne, age 65 (b-1851).
In 1917 Bertha (nee HAMILTON) COCHRANE-DAHL (Mary Jane’s alleged mother) married a third time to Alexander BEARDY of uncertain origins. In 1956 Bertha BEARDY died in Winnipeg at the age of 78.
In 1930 son James Gordon THADDEUS was born. (In his 2000 obituary, James Gordon’s parents are indicated as Mary Jane and Alex THADDEUS).
** For the next 20 years or so, (and to my latest update), we have very little information to refer to, probably because Alex’s children are still living.
In 1952, according to son Richard’s obituary, his mother, Mary Jane COCHRANE died.
It was around 1952 that daughter Florence Mae married Harold Clifford COCHRANE, son of Barbara SINCLAIR and John Thomas COCHRANE (b-1869).
Son Richard married Eileen MURDOCK in the Fisher River Reserve, daughter of Flora and Thomas MURDOCK (1840-1915).
Around 1956 daughter Josephine married Oliver MONKAN, son of Elizabeth (nee KIPLING) CARLSON and Ernest MONKMAN (1911-1954).
In the 1978 obituary of son Richard it indicates that he was survived by his wife Elaine, his father, James THADDEUS of Berens River (His father, James, would have been about 86 years old at that time), and a brother James of Koostatak. He was also survived by two step-brothers, Colin and Horace COCHRANE; two sisters, Mrs. Florence COCHRANE) of Winnipeg and Mrs. Josephine MONKMAN of Selkirk. He was predeceased by his mother, Mary Jane COCHRANE in 1952.
The 2000 obituary for eldest son James Gordon THADDEUS indicates he was predeceased by one sister, Florence COCHRANE, two brothers, Richard THADDEUS and Horace COCHRANE. He was survived by one sister, Josephine MONKMAN, a brother, Colin COCHRANE and a sister-in-law Eileen DANIELS.
