1902

 

On Jan 9, 1902 Henry married Margaret STEVENSON or THOMAS in St Clements Parish. ** Information about Margaret are sketchy. Some sources refer to her by the surname THOMAS, others as STEVENSON. If anyone can provide more information on the Forum hereunder it would be greatly appreciated.

 

Surrender of the St Peters Reserve
1907

 

On Sep 20, 1907 Government officials Hector HOWELL (1842-1918) and Frank PEDLEY (b-1858) and the Chief and Councillors of the St Peters Band agreed to a Surrender of the St Peters Reserve. The surrender was accepted by Order in Council dated October 14, 1907.The same month, the Band and representatives of the department selected the site of the new Reserve, near Fisher River.

Notes from Great Granddaughter Dawn Thomas: While my Great-grandfather Henry was living at the St. Peter's Reserve (Clandeboye Agency) in 1911, my Great-great-grandfather (Henry's father) Philip THOMAS had already relocated to the Fisher River Agency / Indian Reserve, where he and wife Sophia (Nee CADOTTE) are enumerated, along with William PRINCE and wife Mary, a.k.a. Chief SENNA, son of Chief PEGUIS and Chief of Peguis Indian Band in 1887 and from 1902-1910

Census of 1911 in the St Peters Reserve: Cree family of Henry Curtis THOMAS, age 35; wife Margaret, age 28. Children: Jeremiah Clifford (age 7), Wilfred Kenneth (5), Melville Duncan (3) and Gordon Irvine (age 1).

 

Harry moves his Family to the Fisher River Reserve
1912

 

In 1912 Harry moved his family to the Fisher River Reserve (Re grandson K.L. Thomas).

 

From a letter dated March 15, 1915 from the Office of Inspector of Indian Agencies regarding Henry Curtis THOMAS: “This is a young man, married, who has done well since going to Peguis; he moved himself and his family. He is a hardworking and industrious fellow – made a nice home and is steadily improving his condition. I know that his moving did cost him much more than I recommend to be paid him. He paid all the expenses of his moving. Amount to be allowed him, say $25.”

 

Census of 1916 in the Peguis Reserve (Fisher River Agency): Henry Curtis THOMAS, age 39; wife Margaret, age 32. Children: Wilfred Kenneth (age 10), Melville Duncan (8), Orton Irwin (6), Oliver James (4) and Winifred Miriam (age 1).

 

Census of 1921 in the Peguis Reserve, Hodgson: Henry Curtis James THOMAS, age 44; wife Margaret, age 38. Children: Kenneth Wilfred (age 15), Melville Duncan (13), Orton Iriwin (11), Oliver James (9), Winnifred Marion (6), Stanley Elliot (3) and Rodney Henry (age 1).

 

On Aug 12, 1925 Henry Curtis James THOMAS diedin the Peguis Reserve.

 

At some time in the 1930’s daughter Winifred married Walter James SPENCE, son of Florence and Joseph SPENCE (b-1888).

 

Around 1937 son Melvin married Alvina THOMAS from Balsam Bay, daughter of Catherine ANDERSON and William Robert THOMAS (1882-1942).

 

Probably in the late 1930’s son Stanley married Rose Annabelle ROBINSON of uncertain origins.
