From available records, it appears Malcolm & Jean moved to Kirkwall on Orkney mainland after John was born as Malcolm was born in Kirkwall, see extract from birth certificate below.

Malcolm [William's brother] and Sarah Swaney had five children; Malcolm, Ann, James. Thomas and John.
