Re: James Smith: Second Son of John James Smith & Nancy Favel
Hi Nancy, again. I'm currently, over the past year, researching the Favel family and updating Ancestry.ca. I got bored of transcribing the Flett family tree. Flett trees are worse than Smith family trees. You luckily have both. Anyway, I've added references to John Smith's in the HBC Archives bio sh...

Re: WILLIAM ROBERT SMITH (1797-1869)
Hi Nancy. Welcome to Red River Ancestry forum. William Robert Smith had 21 kids so a lot of us in western Canada are his descendants. Although he was a teacher, a lot of his kids did not learn to read and write. The Hart question pops up alot. What we are looking for now are original records in Engl...

Re: DONALD GUNN (1797-1878)
Page 54 of "Red River Adventure: The Story of the Selkirk Settlers" by J W Chalmers (MacMillan 1959) mentions Donald Gunn and the 1813 settlers. The 1813 settlers spent a winter in Churchill and then in spring walked to York Factory. "On April 6, 1814 the brave little expedition set f...

Re: EDWARD PRINCE TAYLOR (1844-1919)
Mary (nee Sabiston) Park's Manitoba Affidavit says she was born Mar 1852. The 1870 Census says she was 18 yrs old (1852). Based on this, I would agree that the Mary Sabiston that married Edward Taylor is NOT the same person that married John Park.

Re: JAMES WHITFORD (1795-1872)
Nancy Ann Whitford (1848-1910) married Thomas Spence in 1865 in Portage la Prairie, according to her Northwest Affidavit. In the 1881 census she is listed as a widow at Victoria Mission. By 1891 she has married Thomas Henry Brown (1839-1918) widower of Jane Scott, and had 2 more children (Bella and ...

Re: Favel/Howse Connection
Hi Outofsocks. Welcome to the forum. I haven't been able to find Elizabeth Nellie Howse after 1910. The court took away her property in Lobstick Settlement likely to settle debts. She married Thomas Anderson between 1901 and 1906. Many of the original families of the Victoria Settlement, moved about...

Re: Henry Erasmus, son of Peter Sr vs Henry Hans Rasmusson
The HBC Bio Sheet for Henry Rasmussen https://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/hbca/biographical/r/rasmussen_henry.pdf was written in Oct 2002. For the info on Jane Stead, they are referencing Gail Morin's book, Métis Families: A Genealogical Compendium published in 1996. Unfortunately, the UofC is updati...

Re: Henry Erasmus, son of Peter Sr vs Henry Hans Rasmusson
I also found Henry Erasmusson (born in Norway) and Jane Stead in the 1870 Manitoba Census St Andrews Page 140. His father is Bastian Erasmusson and Jane's father is listed as Abraham Stead. Daughter Sophia is listed as 9 years old.
