Dear Gary,

John Leask was born on 15 November 1820 and not on 15 November 1821 as is reported here [Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950, index, FamilySearch] https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/VQQG-7TR

His baptism was the subject of a late entry at Sandwick parish in Orkney, Scotland. The record reads as follows: “John Leask lawful son of John Leask and Marjory Wood was born on the 15 Novr 1820 and baptized by the Revd Wm Clouston” [Registrar General for Scotland, New Register House, Sandwick Baptisms, 1818-54, reference OPR.27/2].

John Leask’s place of birth is not identified in his baptismal record but his parents were living at Ginglabreck in Sandwick on 28 May 1821 and it is perfectly possible, probable even, that he was born there [Orkney Family History Society: 1821 Census Return for Sandwick in Orkney].

Kind Regards,

Neil
