UMPHERVILLE vs HUMPHREYVILLE (Mary Brass)

Post by racliff » Mon Oct 02, 2017 10:33 am

It looks like headstone for Mary Brass is using Umpherville. All the markers at Glen Mary cemetery use Umpherville. Mary's headstone can be viewed at:

https://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.c ... 0157212145

The transcription looks like to me as:

In Memory of
Mary
Mother of
Rob Umpherville
Died July 10 1904
Aged 75 Years

Does anyone have any knowledge about the transition of Humphreyville to Umpherville? The other think to notice is that 1904 - 75 = "1829" which seems different than a lot of the published years for her.

Her Scrip Affidavit of 1885 spells her name as Mary HUMPHREYVILLE, indicating her birth-date as 1821 in MB, daughter of Suzanne COMTOIS and Peter BRASS.
There are so many spelling variations to be found that it hardly seems worth the effort to try to sort them out. In those days there weren’t many literate half-breeds in the region so it’s easy to understand spelling variations with such a complicated name.
