Spence, Whitford, Norn, Macaulay

Post by Shirley » Thu Jan 26, 2012 9:42 am

I am researching my ancestors with Orkney, HBC and Red River Settlement connections: (G2) Daniel Macaulay, (G3) William Norn, (G4) Magnus Spence. (G4) James Peter Whitford was born in London, England. (G3) James Whitford was born at RRS.
Magnus Spence was born 1755 Birsay. His HBC bio indicates he began his service 1783 at York Factory. Magnus married Christianna about 1793 at York Factory. I’m hoping a reader of this site can clarify which Spence family he is connected to.
G4 James Peter Whitford, also with a HBC bio, married Sarah. His bio indicates he died “probably at Red River Settlement – May 5, 1818.” Their son James (also HBC bio) married Magnus and Christianna Spence’s daughter Mary - Nov 1820. The Whitford ancestor search is also a work in progress.
William Norn – also with a HBC bio - (b 1825?, parish South Ronaldsay, Orkney) married Sarah (Sally, b 1834), daughter of James (Jr) and Mary Whitford. Sarah and William Norn’s daughter Mary Elizabeth married my great grandfather Daniel Macaulay who was born 1840 at Balallan. Family stories have him in the HBC service but proving that remains a work in progress.
William and Sarah Norn, Daniel and Mary Elizabeth Macaulay, and James and Mary Whitford settled in Alberta - I have been able to follow their lives there.
The Spence and Whitford families of Red River Settlement are the ancestors I’d love to learn more about.
Any assistance or suggestions where I should search will be appreciated. Thanks!

I have been working on a Family Page for Chrisitana (Cree) and Magnus SPENCE (1755-1845) for some time now but just never got around to posting it. I will try to get it finished in the next few days. There will be more information about the WHITFORD families in it as well. Stay tuned.

Notes for JOSEPH WHITFORD:
From the 1834-5 census of the Red River Settlement, we can see that Joseph who has just marrried, seems to have an adult daughter, and 6 children. It is exremely unlikely they are all his children, and some are his siblngs and the extra adult female is his mother. It may be possible that it is his mother in law and her family. However, Joseph is well set for a man his age & background. He has a house 4 stables, a barn, 4 horses, 1 mare, 4 oxen, 1 bull, 7 cows, 12 calves, 7 pigs, 2 ploughs, 1 harrow, 2 carts and cultivatng 18 acres.

That's a very impressive, and I must say rather overwhelming, volume of information; some of it I already have. However I seem to have missed the point or objective behind it all.

I am accustomed to dealing with one family or lineage at a time. Is there some particular one that you are related to or interested in?

Just giving information to a party who requested it and kinda thought I had directed it to that party. Information was/is the point or objective behind it and the report is generated in that manner and not in the family page format which you have used for the Person/family page format is all and makes it easier to follow the large dissemination of information and it was abreivated to just three generations for brevity. Is this the wrong venue to share information?
