re: my connection to Emma Good

My 3x great grandmother was Margaret Moore. (b. 1832-4) She died March 4, 1907 at Whitefish Point, Mich. Her Death cert says she was born at Hudson Bay, and lists Parents as George Moore and Emma Good.

The 1861/2 Candadian Census has the Moore family living in Algoma District. George-61, Emma-45, Elizabeth-24, Margaret-22, Jemmia(?)-19, Charlotte-17, Richard-20, martha-4, Mary-1.

(This info would jive with the dob given on the '81 census.)

1881 Census for Algoma lists Emma Moore age 91 living in the household of son Richard-37. Also living with Richard was sister Charlotte-30. It says Richard, Emma, and Charlotte were born in Rupert's Land.

Look at the age disparities from 1861-81 Richard -3 years, Emma +26 years, and Charlotte -7 years. I believe these are the same people, but I don't get the dates. What about Martha and Mary on the 1861 census. Would Emma have been bearing children in her very late 60s?

I do not know if this Emma Good was ever married to Jospeh Turnor/er, but her grand daughter Jane Moore married the grandson of Jospeh Turner by way of his daughter Elizabeth (Betsy) Turner and Charles Roussain, a commercial fisherman at Coppermine Point, Ont.

This is all very interesting information Dan; I wish I had time to do follow-ups.

I suspect that Martha and Mary MOORE were more likely grandchildren, perhaps Richard MOORE’s children from a previous marriage (his wife is shown as Julia in the 1881 census).

I started researching George MOORE (1774-1846) and gathered quite a bit of information so far, but unfortunately activity on my website has gotten so busy that I have had restrict my activity to a priority list for Special Pages. More about that at this link: SPECIAL FAMILY PAGES

Re: the suggestion that John, Edward and James Good were children of Richard Good

John Good was my great great grandfather. John's father (I don't know his given name) was Irish, from County Tipperary, and a veteran of the Battle of Waterloo. He came to Canada in 1816 and settled near Richmond, Ontario. He and his wife, Jane Mills, had six boys and three girls. Their son Edward settled in the Rockwood Municipality, Manitoba, in 1873. The other five brothers followed him in 1879. Edward and John remained in Rockwood but the other brothers moved farther west.

John had married Jane Ardle in Ontario in 1860; they arrived with eight children and another was born in Rockwood. Jane Ardle immigrated from Ireland as a young girl. Her mother died during the voyage and was buried at sea. Jane became known as "Granny Good" and fulfilled the role of midwife and nurse in the district. John and Jane's son John Edward was my maternal grandmother's father. It was only a few years ago that John Edward's homestead passed from the family.

As this family of Goods were Irish and not associated with HBC, John, Edward and James (one source notes him as a cousin of John and Edward) were not the sons of Richard Good.

However, I am related to several of the HBC employees in the Ancestor List, including John Ballendine (1758 - 1817), Thomas Vincent (1776 - 1832) (my mother was a Vincent), William Thomas (1779/80 - 1818) and William Dennet (1780 - 1864). I am working on a project to visit the graves of all my grandmothers through both my mother and father and so far have identified 21 grandmothers. Most are buried in Manitoba in cemeteries such as St. Andrews on the Red, St. Paul's in West St. Paul, All Saint's Victoria north of Stonewall and Stonewall Municipal.

Interesting Deana! My father’s cousin, Cecil CAMPBELL (b-1897) married Agnes May GOOD b-1901 who was also a daughter of Mary LITTLE and John Edward GOOD (b-1867). They lived in the RM of Rockwood.

In looking for Harriet Turner's baptismal, I found that Richard Good was married to a Sarah Good. They had a daughter in 1811 named Anne. Also in 1843 Richard Good was listed as father to Emma Good who married George Moore, found in the Ontario Library of Archives. I am still tracking down "Emma" married to Joseph Turner. It seems unlikely that it was Emma Good. If Richard Good came to Canada as a 16 year old man, in 1796, and Joseph/Emma's first child Hannah was born in 1806. It would only make Emma 10, assuming Richard fathered a child upon arrival.

My connection is Joesph and Emma Turner, as my relatives. Down through the Udgaarden family.

I have Emma born about 1790, making her 16 in 1806. Other sources have contradictory information about her birth date, so there seems to be nothing concrete in that regard.

If Richard Good did not come to Canada until 1796, and Emma was born in 1790, it would not be possible for her to be Richard Good's daughter? Specially since he is listed as being born in 1780? I am still searching for her last name.

I am another who is particularly interested in the mystery surrounding Joseph Alexander Turnor's (1783-1865) wife. I am a descendant of Mary Morrison (Turnor) (1824-1901). I have submitted my DNA for Mitochondrial testing. My maternal lineage leads back and through the spouse of Joseph Alexander Turnor, who ever she may be.... So.... it would be great if science, and not only records, could lead me to help to confirm or refute the Turnor - Good connection. Just waiting for the test result and time for other descendants to surface. I am using MyHeritage and FTDNA at this time.
