Thanks Wanda. I was able to play it for myself – sounds good.

Unfortunately, since it’s not on U-Tube it would be illegal for me to post this audio on my website without Sol’s permission. If you can get that from him, I would love to add it.

I don't think he's still alive. Not sure who would have the rights.

Hello Gary,

My name is Suzanne and I am the namesake of the Suzanne E. The boat was built by my father, Noah Epstein, in 1946. My father grew up in Selkirk, MB and was the owner of Selkirk Fisheries. I had the honour of christening the boat. My father sold his business and the boat to Booth Fisheries in the 1950's.

We have been summer residents of Gimli for over forty years. I have been lobbying to have one of the streets in Gimli named to commemorate the Suzanne E but have not been successful to date, even though many streets are named for the fishing boats.

My husband was the one who approached the artist on the pier in Gimli a few years ago about commissioning a painting of the Suzanne E but there is a process to follow before any topic is allowed to be represented on the pier. We would love for this to happen.

Regarding the CBC documentary, it was done by filmmaker, Andy Blicq, who sometimes resides in Gimli. I may have a copy somewhere.

Perhaps with the 50th anniversary of the tragedy approaching, there might be some way to acknowledge the event.

Please feel free to contact me.

Suzanne Golden (nee Epstein)

Suzanne, that is so interesting! I have never thought about who the boat might be named after. You should contact the Interlake Spectator or the Express with your story - not a lot of people now know of it. I teach about it as part of a local legends unit in gr. 7/8 ELA. I have copies of the newspaper reports from the time of the accident. I think a pic of the Suzanne E on the dock would be excellent and a worthy topic, as well as a street name. I could help you if you like. Wanda Sparkes (Arborg)

Thanks very much for that Suzanne. I have added a comment about that to the narrative.

Hello Gary and Wanda

Thank you so much for adding my information to the narrative and adding relevant dates as well.

Wanda, I think your suggestion about going to the Interlake Spectator is a wonderful idea. I am not sure where the Express is published. The fact that you teach about it to your ELA classes is amazing. I would be very interested to read your curriculum.

I have sent a letter to the RM of Gimli requesting a street be named to commemorate the Suzanne E.

Would it be possible for both of you to send me some of the information from the website and copies of the newspaper articles? I would be very grateful. I would like to submit it to the people in charge of the Gimli Pier art project? I have surprisingly little on the subject except for a couple of old photographs and some very distant memories.

Any help and suggestions are greatly appreciated. What is the best way to expedite this?

Suzanne

As a matter of interest regarding other Lake Winnipeg tragedies I have added a few comments about the sinking of the SS Keewatin in 1890 which ultimately resulted in three deaths.

For those of you who have an interest in the Legend of the Suzanne E, it is 50 years ago today that the ship sank. CBC radio Noon did a nice piece rfemembering the event. Janet Stuart interviewed Andy Blicq who was the documentarian of the Requiem of the Suzanne E which aired in 1995. According to Andy, the fishing community around the lake still recalls the event. Janet also played the song by Solly Sigurdson, which he recorded in 1970.

My name is Alexander Neison. In my early years my grandfather Edward Neison (AKA- Capt. Ed Nelson built the Suzanne E in Winnipeg and I believe he was the first Capt. on the Suzanne. I wheeled for him during my school summer holidays. thought this might be of interest.

Thanks Alexander! Looks like you’re related to Suzanne (nee EPSTEIN) GOLDEN, namesake of the boat. I will add your comments to the discussions at this link.
