Welcome to our Forum Gariwerd! (would be nice to have your real name)
Tell us more about your ancestor Malcolm, and your great grandmother. When and where they were born, etc. Did they come to Canada?

Malcolm[William's brother] and Sarah Swaney had five children; Malcolm, Ann, James. Thomas and John.

Thomas moved from Eday to Kirkwall (Orkney mainland) and married Helen Campbell. They had seven children; Sarah, Helen, Thomina, Johanna, Edward and Lizzie.

Sarah [Great grandmother on my father's mother's side] moved to Edinburgh, Scotland and married George Hitchcock, they had two children; Helen and Thomas.

Helen then married my grandfather David Ireland

David & Helen had seven children; Sarah, Jane, David [my father], John, George, Helen and Robert.

At my father's funeral a cousin mentioned that we were connected to a Cree Indian Chief's daughter, this set me off researching the family tree in Orkney, HBC and RRA. I have included information from HBC & RRA in my family tree with credits.

I revisited RRA as I am still trying to identity the name of the Cree Chief. I then saw your request for clarification on William and thought it was a chance to give RRA something back.

To my knowledge no other member of William's family went to Canada with HBC.

I subsequently moved from the Edinburgh area to Thurso, Highland some 50 years ago and ironically I have discovered that my great grandmothers mother came from Thurso!

From available records, it appears Malcolm & Jean moved to Kirkwall on Orkney mainland after John was born as Malcolm was born in Kirkwall, see extract from birth certificate below.

Malcolom Scott was born 8th May 1812, location, Kirkwall, Orkney.
Father: Malcolm Scott, Mother Jean Fotheringham.
Baptised on 9th May 1812 by Mr Flather.
Witnesses, Arthur Dearness & Margaret Groundwater.

The remainder of the children were born on Eday.

Again I can provide further details of the Scott family on my return from a few days holiday.

Just another interesting fact before I head off on a few days holiday, my username Gariwerd is the aboriginal name for the Grampian mountains in the state of Victoria, Australia.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. Unfortunately all I have recorded for Malcolm's age is about 1786, location, Parish of Eday & Pharay. Father & mother not known [Infomation from http://www.raymiller.co.uk].

When on holiday on Eday I took photographs of several headstones in the two cemeteries and will re-check them and Scotlanspeople web site when I return home in about 10 days time, but tend to think I will draw a blank.

Jean Fotheringham, born 2 July 1785.location Parish of Sanday, Orkney, Scotland. Father, John Fotheringham, mother Jean Sinclair.

Marriage could not find definitive information, date before 1812. Malcolm, age about 20, Jean's age about 21 to 24.

Gary,

I have checked my photos of the headstones from the two Eday cemeteries and other data I collected but unfortunately I cannot find any other accurate information on the birth of Malcolm Scott [William Scott's father] other than that on the web site; http://www.raymiller.co.uk.
I will keep you informed if I uncover any other relevant information. Please let me know if you would like me to attach a copy of William Scott's (1815-1874) birth certificate.
