From what I know, Ellen Mayo was born in 1870 in the nwt in what is now MB. She was likely born out of wedlock. The oral history is that her mother was FN and lost her status and that her father's family name was Mayo. Her father was likely Benjamin Mayo but I don't think Mary Daniels was Ellen Mayo's mother as Mary was not First Nations so would not have had Status which is contrary to the family's oral history.

Ellen moved to Souix Narrows after her spouse died, so her Nation may have been near there.

I will let you know if I discover more details as I review various records. If you can suggest any sources such as papers or written histories I would be greatful.

What is your source indicating Ellen’s birthdate / out of wedlock? - - and her mother as a First Nations woman?

Birthdate is based on census records (the one she filled out lists her birthdate as 1870', the one her husband filled out lists it as 1873. I'm inclined to trust her entry as the correct date.)

Our oral family history is that her mother lost her Aboriginal Status when Ellen was born to a non-First Nations father. I am looking for written records to confirm.
