Inquiring - the birth of Ann Catherine Orvis you have as her sister Julia was born June 2, 1880 unless your Ann Catherine Orvis is from a different Family all together. As she is listed as being born in census about 1878. Was in Manitoba Vital Stats Data Base - married in 1891 to a William Thomas Cook. Ann to me is a great Aunt other family members say there was not another Ann Catherine.

re Ann Catherine Orvis - On the 1881 census, Ann is listed as 3 years. ***
Her mother Mary Ann nee Mclean (father Donald McLean 1838 - 1919) died after the birth of her son, Charles Finlay Apr 22, 1882. Ann's father (John Benson Orvis) sent his 4 daughters to live with his brother.
John remarried Mar 29, 1883 to Isabell Irvine and had at least 9 other children. One of them Lillian Orvis born May 15 or Aug 13, 1896 shows up on the 1911 Census under Samuel Connolly 33, wife Anna C. Connolly 32, Ethel E. 5, as Lillian Davis (if you look at the original you can see how Orvis was misread as Davis), sister-in-law (i.e. sister to Anna C. who is Ann Catherine)

I, too, was puzzled as how Ann could have married William Cook in 1891.

***The birthdate I had for Ann July 7, 1880 was possibly incorrect, July 7, 1878 seems more plausible. Her death certificate gave her death as Dec 17, 1934, Selkirk, MB aged 54.

Hi Janet,
Where do you get the kids were given to a brother as John B Orvis had 2 living brothers who lived in the states. As I was told that the girls were taken in by people in the surrounding area of Balsam Bay, Manitoba in Fort Alexander area as well. He was the only one born in Canada, he was in the Census in the states 1850.

Julia Orvis was taken in or adopted by Henry and Mary Smith shows in 1891 census.
