Previously posted by Donald Gowen on the Peter Fidler website:
History of Gowen house in Old England
Ernest Charles Gowen 1908 to 1977 bought this house in the mid 1940s and resided in it until 1968 when he bought a house in the town of Selkirk. His son Donald Gordon Gowen took possession of the property in the summer of 1968 and resided therein until his separation in 1977. The property is now resided in by Peter Charles Gowen and family; Don’s older brother.
When Ernest Gowen purchased the property through the DVA there was a family residing in the house by the name of Favel. Whether they were the previous owners or just renting I don’t know.
To learn about the house, you can access the Selkirk Enterprise archives. There was a story printed in the Selkirk Enterprise in the 1960s with a photo of the house. The photo was taken in early December as there is a Christmas lying on the roof of the house. It was placed there to keep it in shape until it was time to bring it into the house to be decorated for Christmas.
The late Elsie McKay who wrote a column in the Selkirk Enterprise pertaining to the history of the town of Selkirk and district once had a photo of the property which was originally the Old England Inn. Her house burned in the late 60s or early 70s and the photo was destroyed by the fire. If you can access the Manitoba archives you may be able to acquire a photo from there.
You also inquired about a photo of Peter Fidler. You may be able to procure one from Moe Gowen (Maurice not Morris) as he does have a collection of old family photos. If he doesn’t have one he will be able to direct you to Ruth Gowen who has a more extensive collection of old family photos.

I have updated the ERNEST GOWEN Page with a picture of the family, as well as your Grandfather's PETER FIDLER Page with a picture of him, thanks to Peter Gowen.

Donald Gowen Emailed me back in May: Do you hear from Ross McLeod other than on the Peter Fidler site? We were very good friends when we were young up until our early 20s when we somehow drifted apart. I'd been searching for him since i first got on the Internet about 15 years ago. I haven't found him until I went onto your site. If you see or hear from him would you please give him my email address and ask him to contact me, or if you have it perhaps you could give his email address to me. Thank you too much.
