You have highlighted the problem of Peter Ballandine's descent very clearly.
Having said that, nowhere can I find a record of John B & Sara McLeod having a son named Peter.
John B's birthdate would be about right for him to be Peter's father but all the records I have show him as dying in 1856 whereas the record I have of the John B, Peters father, show him as dying in 1896 but his dob is not given. Maybe the 1896 date is a typo!
My mother, Lillian Anna Ballenden, is the great grandaughter of John McNab Ballenden, born in 1813 in Stromness, Orkney. His father was Chief Factor John Ballenden (1758-1817) referred to in my post of July 27th. He was the father of the John Ballenden who married Sarah McLeod

Sorry John – I seem to have forgotten to add John McNab BALLENDEN b-1813 as a child in my narrative. I had hesitated because I couldn’t understand why there were two sons both named John. Perhaps they both had second names that distinguished them?

Regarding Peter: You’re right, and I’m beginning to think that Peter BALLENDINE b-1836 was most likely a son of Mary (Polly) HUMPHREYVILLE and the Half-breed John BALLENDINE born around 1810 who we discussed previously.

It does seem strange to have two sons named John but nowhere can I find a record of John B (1811) having a second name to distinguish him from his brother John McNab.

Still no indication as to the origins of of Peter's father.
Perhaps he just assumed the Ballendine name

Hi all, I've also been trying to determine who Peter Ballendine's father was...no luck so far!
My great grandmother was Jane Mary Ballendine b.1866, married to Duncan Alexander McRae (son of the stonemason, Duncan McRae).
Jane's father was Samuel Ballendine b.1839, married to Elizabeth Smith (daughter of William Robert Smith & Mary Anne Swain).
Samuel's father was George Ballendine b.1807, married to Jane Black (daughter of Samuel Black b.1780 in Pitsligo, Aberdeen - the Norwest Company explorer who was murdered in Kamloops, BC).
George's father was John Ballenden (1758-1817). I have George's mother as Jane Cree as most of what I've read disputes that John's wife was Jane Favell. Has anyone confirmed that one way or the other?

Thanks,

Lori Willcox

Lori: It looks quite certain from my information that your ancestral George BALLENDINE (1807-1875) was the son of Jane BLACK (NOT Jane FAVEL), and John BALLENDINE from Scotland (b-1780) as per Sprague & Frye ID-168 and ID-171.

I have quite a bit of information about your George BALLENDINE but have not done a thorough review in order to create a Family Page for him yet. I have been so busy lately that I pretty much have to work on families that are on my Priority List. More about that at this link:

Janelle Ballenden posted under old topic on Aug 30, 2015:
Hi John
I'm married to Christopher Ballenden who lives in Sydney, Australia - 5th son of John (Jock) St Clair Ballenden who immigrated from South Africa in the 50s. Jock would be your mother's cousin.

Chris was in contact with a distant relative in South Africa about 10 years ago who sent him some material on the Ballenden family (photocopies of photos and news clippings plus some handwritten family tree lineage etc). I have kept the material tucked away until I started on our family tree - which I began about a month ago. Unfortunately Chris can't remember who sent it - he does remember that 'Ballenden' wasn't their surname (which makes me think it could have been you)?

I would love to get better copies of the photos, especially one of Jock's parents (Henry & Mary) at John Laffette's (your grandfather?) wedding, so, if by chance you are the Ballenden historian I'm looking for, could you please contact me.

thanks
Janelle Ballenden

When/ where were Jock’s parents born? Is that John Henry Moffat BALLENDEN b-1839 who married Mary LEWIS b-1840?
