Hi Marlene, are you a member of the Pagwa River facebook group? There are many descendants of Sam Iserhoff in the group.

Sophia's maiden name was actually Wenjack. I've got a copy of Sam's bible entries.

Thanks Jennifer. Now we have three choices; Sophia GEORGE, WINFRACK or WENJACK.

Sophia's last name was definitely Wenjack, not Winfrack (although it does look a little like Winfrack in Sam's bible). Her parents names were William and Charlotte. She had at least one sister (Sarah) and at least 4 brothers (James, John, Henry and Josiah). At least two of the brothers lived to adulthood and married. There are a myriad of different spellings for 'Wenjack' in the census records including Weangeek, Weangeck, Weanjack, Weayek, Weayak, Wayeck, Weoyah and Wenjans (I kid you not!) but they are all the same family. The variations have to do with poor spelling, poor penmanship, poor records and really poor transcribing. Not only was the spelling done phonetically (sort of) but the enumerators must have counted on their fingers when trying to establish ages for the records.

Thanks again Jennifer. I have updated the narrative accordingly.

Oh that's great. Thanks Gary. And now for Hannah.... I believe she was from the Nayassit family (the family name is still common in Waswanipi today) but I haven't yet got confirmation so I'll keep sleuthing.
