Herman PATZER was born Nov 20, 1878 in Johannesthal, Luzk, Russia, son of Louise HOHN and Ludwig Johann PATZER (b-1854).

 

In 1900 Herman immigrated to Manitoba, Canada.

 

On Dec 2,1902 Herman PATZER married Rosine HEMMINGER in Winnipeg, daughter of Bertha GIRSCHEWSKI and Gottlieb HEMMINGER (1842-1908).

 

From St Clements Heritage: In the spring of 1902 German Lutherans from Poland, Russia, Austria and Germany began to take up homesteads in the area later known as Thalberg.

 

Census of 1906 in the Brokenhead District (20-16-8-Epm; Thalberg area): Herman PATZER, age 26; wife Rosa, age 23. Children: Gottlieb (age 3) and William (age 1).

 St Clements Heritage: Religious services were held in local homes until 1907 when services were moved to the newly constructed Thalberg School. That same year, the Trinity Congregation was organized, holding its first communion on December 17, 1907.

 

Census of 1911 in the Thalberg area: Herman PATZER, age 31; wife Rosina, age 27. Children: Gottlieb (age 7), Wilhelm (5), Lydia (age 3) and baby Martha. Brother: Theodore PATZER, age 25 (born 1885 in Russia; immigrated in 1910).

 

World War I
1914-1918

 

On Aug 4, 1914 Great Britain (Canada on Aug 5) declared war on Germany and Austria-Hungary to uphold treaties with France and Belgium which were under German attack. This marked the beginning of World War I.

 

Census of 1916 in the Thalberg area: Herman PATZER, age 38; wife Roseana, age 31. Children: Gottlieb (age 12), William (10), Lydia (8), Martha (5), Fredrick (3) and baby Adolf. Brother: Gottlieb PATZER, age 49 (born 1867 in Russia Lithuania; immigrated 1912). Lodger: Edward DESUSTY, age 62 (born c1854 in Russia; immigrated 1901).

 

In 1916-17 the Trinity Lutheran Church building was constructed at Thalberg, and dedicated on March 25, 1917. The church originally faced east. (In 1978 it was placed on its present location).

November 11, 1918, Armistice Day (Remembrance Day) marked the end of the First World War.

 

Census of 1921 in the Thalberg area: Herman PATZER, age 41; wife Rosine, age 37. Children: Gottlieb (age 17), William (15), Lydia (13), Martha (10), Fred (8), Adolph (5) and Louis (age 2). Lodger: Edward GESCHEREFFT, age 66 (born 1855 in Germany; immigrated 1900)

In 1921 son Frederick married Adele NEURENBERG in Thalberg, daughter of Alvina NACHTIGAL and Ferdinand NEURENBERG (1896-1959).

 

 In 1927 son Gottlieb married Flora Ida STEFFAN in Thalburg, MB, daughter of Maria MESSINGER and Ferdinand STEFFAN (1867-1995).

 

In 1928 eldest daughter Lydia married Ludwig ZIRK in Thalberg, son of Justina SONNENBERG and Ferdinand ZIRK (1859-1929).

 

In 1929 son William married Linda PANKRATH in Thalberg, daughter of Emma HIEBERT and Ferdinand PANKRATH
Also in 1929 daughter Martha married Herman Oswald STEFFAN (her brother-in-law) in Thalberg, son of Maria MESSINGER and Ferdinand STEFFAN (1867-1945).

 

World War II
1939-1945

 

On Sept 4, 1939 Canada and Britain declared war on Germany, and almost immediately new recruits began pouring into Winnipeg to sign up with the Winnipeg Grenadiers and the Royal Rifles of Canada.

 

In 1940 son Frederick married Adele NEURENBERG in Thalberg, daughter of Alvina NACHTIGAL and Ferdinand NEURENBERG (1896-1959). In 1943 Frederick PATZER died, and in 1944 widow Adele re-married to his younger brother Adolph PATZER in Glenmoor, MB.

 

On May 7, 1945 Germany surrendered and the War in Europe ended; the next day, May 8, is declared VE Day.

 

In 1953 youngest son Louis married Elsie MARTIN in Beausejour, daughter of Saraphina ZIERK and Henry MARTIN who died in 1950.

 

On Nov 15, 1958 Herman PATZER died in the Beausejour Hospital. He was buried in the Thalberg Trinity Church Cemetery.

 

On July 11, 1964 Widow Rosina (nee HEMMINGER) PATZER died at the Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg at the age of 81. She was buried with her husband in the Thalberg Cemetery.
