Re: JOHN EDWARD HARRIOTT (1797-1866)

Here is a wonderful quotation from John Edward Harriott, who is one of my heroes and a man I had the luck to portray to visitors at Fort Edmonton Park in 2006. "When I say married, I mean according to the custom of the country, which was by an agreement between the father of the girl and the pe...

Re: JOHN EDWARD HARRIOTT (1797-1866)

Gary I have archival pictures of some of the Harriott kids. Would you like me to send them to you? I think Christy, Victoire and Alexander.

Re: JOHN ROWAND (1787-1854)

I have talked with a friend who is an Archivist at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. He has forwarded me the donation material from Mrs. Edna Rowand Cramer who donated the photo purported to be Louise Umphreville. But Mrs. Cramer, bless her heart, has identified the woman in the image as "Ade...

Re: JOHN ROWAND (1787-1854)

Beth Balsillie, you are blowing my mind with this photograph of Louise! I had always thought that no photo had ever been taken of her.

Are you sure it's not Margaret Louisa ROWAND, daughter of John Jr, or some other relation? She certainly looks like a 'Rowand.'

Re: JOHN ROWAND (1787-1854)

Hooray! Congratulations on getting so much more up - even the confusing Pierre Breland! Czar pg 62: Presumably their fifth child was Henry, who may have been born about 1820. When she came to live with John ROWAND, Louise had borne at least one child whom undoubtedly she brought with her. ** My comm...

Re: JOHN ROWAND (1812-1865)

You're too kind Gary. My name is Tom Long, I'm the Public Interpretation Coordinator for Fort Edmonton Park, where we have a replica of the 1846 Fort Edmonton. Some of the blogs that I and my staff have done pertinent to the Rowands and the fur trade are here: http://www.fortedmontonpark.ca/category...

Re: EDWARD HUMPHREYVILLE (1775-?)

Sorry, I meant to add in that MacGregor's dates of Rowand and Montour living in tents with two Metis women in 1810 while a new post was being built.

Re: EDWARD HUMPHREYVILLE (1775-?)

Wonderful! Prior to John ROWAND, Louise UMPHERVILLE was allied with Pierre Boshue dit BRELAND. This country-marriage produced a number of children at least some of whom were adopted by John around 1810, including Marie-Anne BRELAND. Marie-Anne, who called John 'father', married a clerk named Richard...

Re: THOMAS HUMPREYVILLE (1779-?)

I love this site so much! I have been compiling information for a few years on Thomas' sister, Louise UMPHREVILLE the wife (in the manner of the country) of John ROWAND, Chief Factor of Fort Edmonton. As I work at Fort Edmonton Park, this was been of great interest to me. However, I am not a profess...

Re: JOHN ROWAND (1812-1865)

Thanks for the reply Beth! I didn't know about the will. Are you a Rowand descendant yourself then? I have been working on their time in Fort Edmonton for some time and have collected some information on Louise Umphreville. Would you be interested in taking a look at it to see if you can add anythin...
