Who were the parents of the brothers John & James SMITH? At this point we simply don’t know for certain. They may have been descendants of Nancy SANDERSON and Alexander SMITH (1789-1860), one of the earliest known Indians named SMITH in the Red River area (from Sprague & Frye’s Genealogy of the First Métis Nation). If anyone has the answer, please let us know on the Forum.

Does the following information help with the question of the parents of the Smith brothers?
fo.236 No.248. 20 November 1832. ALEXANDER SMITH, an Indian and NANCY BEAR his reputed wife were married at Red River Settlement by D.T.Jones. Witnesses: Robert Sandison and Jacob Bear (PAM. HBA, E4/1b, Red River Settlement, Marriages and Burials, 1820-1841, mf 4M104.

Kind regards Pam

Very interesting Pam!
That is information I wasn’t aware of. Do you have any further information about the Nancy BEAR in that marriage? I am currently looking at the early Indian families in the Smith reserves of the Prince Albert and Fort a la Corne area. There were certainly a lot of BEAR families in those reserves as well, some of them I suspect returned to their home territory from the St Peters Indian Settlement, just as the SMITH brothers did.

Definitely no strong direct evidence John Smith native of Legerwood, Scotland may be related considering how common the Smith surname is, but I think it's worth looking into maybe even with Y-DNA. My recent post on him: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=948
