This is a wonderful site with info I never knew

I never knew that Hugh had also come to Canada and worked for the HBC.

I still have one major puzzzle. For years I thought George married Francis Thomas, d of John Thomas, who was fired at one point by Thomas Thomas.

But some dates of her birth and her fist marriage date and age at death make no sense. Your entry has two dates of birth 1807 and 1796. If 1807 is correct she would have been 6 years old when she first married Stewart in 1813. If 1796 is the correct date she would have been 17, possible but still young.

Your entry also says she died Novemebr 1869 at 62 years of age. I can cfm that is her date of death because fam bible says it. But if she was as you say 62 when she died , then she was born in 1807, not 1796 and she could not have married Stewart.

I then thought that George married another Francis Thomas, the daughter of Thomas Thomas since her age fits better.

But on your site you say she married some one else which I had no info on.

I thus remain puzzled and would welcome more info.

yours, George Johnstone, Ottawa.

Just noticed that you say George moved to Red River in 1831 when his wife Fanny was 24 years old. That also makes her date of birth 1807, too young to have married Stewart in 1813.

Welcome aboard George!

Thanks for pointing out my errors and miscalculations. Fanny was indeed born in 1796 according to most of my information. Teenage marriages were not uncommon in those days among native women. I have updated George’s Page and I hope I made the right changes.

We would be interested in your own connections to this family. Tell us more about your lineage and where your ancestors fit into the picture.

thanks very much

I would not change your dates on Fanny Thomas yet.

I am still confused as to which one married George Johnstone

According to the Thomas genology on line concerning Fanny Thomas daughter of John Thomas:
)-*Frances (Fanny) Thomas, Metis, b-1796 Moose Factory, married about 1811 Moose Factory, (I)-Andrew Stewart (1789-1822) (II)-Robert (Frederick) Stewart, Metis b-1813 Moose Factory, died April 11, 1889 Scotland

therfore she is buried in Scotland and is not the Frances, wife of G Johnstone buried at St Andrews. Other info also says this Fanny, d of John Thomas, married Buxton, not the Fanny daughter of Thomas Thomas.

I am still confused but still lean towards Fanny Thomas, d of Thomas Thomas a Geogre's wife.

That's the point I was trying to make.

"There you can see where Fanny and George both died in Red River; Fanny in 1869, George in 1873. They’re both buried in the Old St Andrews Church Cemetery."

The Fanny Thomas buried in St Andrews can NOT be either the daughter of Thomas Thomas or John Thomas since the first died on a different date in the US and the latter died in Scotland.

so I now have no idea who George's wife's parents were.

George: I must be missing something. Where do you get the Fanny who died in Scotland?

I think we can forget about Fanny, the daughter of Thomas THOMAS. She married BUXTON.

George: Now I see where you’re coming from. I’m familiar with that website. It’s full of misleading information!

You aren’t reading my narrative closely enough and I guess I didn’t use the right words to explain it better! I will do some revision.

Regarding Andrew STEWART: Fanny married Andrew STEWART (1789-1822) who was born in Scotland. He died at Fort Albany. His widow, Fanny then re-married to George JOHNSTONE.

Regarding Alex CHRISTIE: Fanny did not marry CHRISTIE, she was married by him (he performed the marriage) to George JOHNSTONE at Moose Factory.

I’m still waiting to hear your own lineage back to George.
