My husband Barry is a grandson of Norman McLeod B.1870. I have read that John McLeod in 1870 Census lived near his brother Malcolm! but I do not have access at this time to the Census. How is it confirmed that they are brothers, | certainly hope they are, just have never had any of this info before. I just found this site and I am very excited, have been working on this family for a few years and would like to contribute what I do know.

Nice to hear from you Edith!
After re-reviewing my own information I fear I may have put my foot in my mouth with the statement about John’s brother Malcolm. I can’t seem to recall where I arrived at that conclusion, but after another look I found a lot of confusion with several other Malcolms about the same age. I will check further when I get a chance, but I may have to remove that.

It would help if we knew for sure who John McLEOD’s parents were in Scotland. Do you have anything about that?

I have two sons of Norman; Norman Jr. b-1906 and Howard Graham b-1922. Which one is Barry’s father?

Hi, Barry's father is Norman. John McLeod left a black book that reads oldest son Murdock is named for John's Father, oldest daughter Mary is named for John's Mother, daughter Margaret is named for John's Aunt. That is all we know for now, will keep looking. One of Barry's sisters thinks he came from the Outer Hebrides, but I think this may have come from all of the John McLeods listed with the HBC. I could send a copy of the info in this book to you, there is not a lot but it confirms some of the births and deaths. Keep well, Edith McLeod.

John McLeod - Married to Clementine Harper is my Great Great Grandfather.
I am stalled on my decendant from Manitoba ..Its been difficult to find records of Him or his brother Malcolm. Any one had success?

His son John McLeod Married into the McDonald/Fraser Clans with roots back to Nancy Beaudry and Colin Fraser I can trace back to Simon Fraser on that side. The John McLeod from Scotland is a different story ..so common a name ..

John McLeod. Princeton BC

> (Saturday) afternoon he (referencing her brother Christopher) and I walked round the coulée to visit old John McLeod. Do you know John McLeod? Well, he's a new friend and a most interesting man who has come to spend the winter with his son Henry McLeod. Henry is our neighbour to the South-West, himself a most attractive half-breed, looking just like a Fennimore Cooper Indian. But John is far more beautiful than Henry. His father was a Highlander, whose kilt and a bit of Scotch turf were buried with him; and his mother was a Cree Indian. He himself is 75 now, about six feet tall and quite broad and upright still. His hair and eyes are black and his skin a clear olive colour. But his features are a fine blend of Highland and Indian; and his face has the beauty of holiness, for John is a devout and enthusiastic Christian...
> He loves talking about the Faith and about his own conversion which took place about 35 years ago. His knowledge of the Bible is wonderful; but although nominally an Anglican he received his spiritual inspiration from some Protestant sect, which has tinged his views with a rigidity quite alien to his most generous and tender heart. For instance, he cannot easily believe that a man can be a Christian who smokes - or that a woman who wears trousers can be saved. And yet this puts all his relations and friends of both sexes into such a precarious position that his heart continually contradicts his mind...
> Presently the grandchildren trickled in from school, delightful looking kids with coal-black hair and eyes and round red faces. We asked John if they could sing a hymn to us, and he and they responded with a will. They sang three or four very long ones from a super Moody and Sankey book; setting the most sacred of words to little jiggly tunes that would make Walford Davies and Harvey Grace pass out right on the spot. But the children sang with such a will, their bright eyes glued to their grandfathers face and catching some of the light of his enthusiasm, that, sitting in that tiny log shack and listening to their little voices and his fervent one, I began to feel it was some of the finest worship yet offered to God in this country.

But Prisca brought sad news and that was dear old John McLeod had died. You remember, that fine old half-breed neighbour of ours who was so devout. Well, two days before Camp broke up his sons sent for me (Bruno being on his way down from the Hope). Prisca went instead and spent all the time she could sitting in his little cabin. He had been ailing for some time, but this was clearly the end. She said he lay in a kind of coma while his three grown-up sons star round day and night and allowed no one else to touch him. Occasionally he recognized them and seemed glad to have her (Pricilla) there. Shortly before she had to come away he made a great effort to sing one of the bright little mission hymns he used to teach his grandchildren. But after a line or two his strength failed, and he explained, "I can't sing any more now; but soon I shall sing for all eternity."
After that he didn't speak anymore; but his face grew more and more serene and beautiful and late that night he died.
