Hi there,
My grandmother was Janet Elizabeth McLeod, daughter of John McLeod and Margaret (Cochrane) Johnston. I am trying to find out
more about Margaret Cochrane, my great grandmother. We are trying to find out the indigenous lineage in the family. I believe to
be Cree but it would have been on Margaret Cochrane's side as John was from Scotland. Can anyone help with this? I looked up
all the Cochranes and no reference to a Margaret. And the fellow she married before John McLeod was not referenced
under the Johnston named here. Thank you so much for any info.
Joyce

Hello! I’m also looking for info on Margaret. Her son Colin is my lineage, whom she had with James Johnston. I believe James was indigenous as well.

I also suspect Margaret to be Cree, however no proof so far. I wonder if her parents received the last name “Cochrane” from a priest?

Anywho, happy researching!

I guess we are cousins through Margaret!! I am also thinking Manitoba Cree but my other cousins think she may have been
Ojiboway. Growing up I am sure my mom and dad both indicated Cree. Not sure where the Cochrane came from but probably from
the Church

Well hello then cousin! I thought I would share.. just found this and still have lots of researching to do.. but from what I know Margaret had a brother named Alexander (Alex) who was born in 1845 and died 1927. He was apart of the Egyptian Expedition Force (1884-85). I figured I would try researching him in order to find more on the family. This link mentions him and states he’s from the St. Peter’s Reserve, band member # 116. Again, I’ll have to research this more to be certain but this might be a good clue! If not the answer to our questions.

I believe so! Still trying to make certain of that though. However, I did find baptism records for Margaret and her parents. I can’t figure out how to get photos attached to this.. but the document is from the HBC and states they were all baptized (Margaret and her parents) on October 4th 1840 Red River Settlement. I have also found census records stating “st peters” which leads me to believe it’s St. Peter’s reserve. Same as what’s mentioned under Alex.
