Hi Gary

The children of ALEXANDER GEORGE JOHNSTONE (1873-1944) that resided in Selkirk are my aunts and uncles and their children - the Johnstone sisters and Walter and Mamie's family for instance - are my cousins. The problem is I don't know how we are related.

I have been living up north for about 40 years (18 years in Tuktoyaktuk and the rest mostly here in Inuvik) and have lost track of the gang down there. When I made a family tree for my grandsons a few years back, I couldn't remember how we were related - if I ever really knew. So every now and then I go on the internet and try again. I seem to have accounted for the family on my father's (Archie McLeod 1918-1992) side and my mother's (Isobel McLeod nee Dobie 1920-1973) but could not find anything. I looked for a connection between Archie's mother (Isabella McLeod nee Graham 1886-1958) and Kate Johnstone nee Rennie as they are both from Scotland but Kate would be about 20 years younger.

Then I saw your Johnstone page and thought Gary will be able to solve the mystery!

Any ideas?

Regards
Ross McLeod

Gary asked: "Somewhere in my searches I recall finding an Angus Graham McLEOD who had some kind of a connection to the JOHNSTONE family. Perhaps that was your Uncle who you say married Margaret FLOCK. Can you tell me more about them?"

Other than the McLeod stuff, the only info I have about Uncle Graham and Aunt Margaret Eleanor "Margie" McLeod is that her parents were Hugo Flock and Dorothea Flock nee Dressler. Hope this helps.

Ross: About your JOHNSTONE Connection:

In your father’s obit it mentions three step?-daughters , Joan (Peter) JOHNSTON of Edmonton, Adele (John) MACKAY of Port Coquitlam, B.C., Betty (Rick) HANSEN of Edmonton.

Does that mean that Joan JOHNSTON was a child of your step-mother, Marjorie AFFOLTER?

I’m also curious as to whether the Rick HANSEN mentioned might have been the one who made the news by his marathon across Canada in a wheel-chair.

Hi Gary

Joan Johnston nee Affolter, wife of Peter Johnston, Adele Mackay nee Affolter, and Betty Hansen nee Affolter are all Marjorie's daughters and have no connection to the Johnstones. I would be aware if the relationship existed. Sorry to disappoint you, but this Rick Hansen is a plumber.

You are related to the Johnstones via the Dobie family

Don Dobie and Alexander Christie Johnstone ( my father) were first cousins. I believe Don Dobie's father married a Macdonald, a sister of my father's mom ( I think).

Don Dobie was my father's best man in 1946 in Toronto. Don moved to Calgary and was very successful in oil business. His wife is Muriel. I only met him once or twice, 1969 for sure and he took me up to Banff. Very wonderful people. Hope this helps

for RossM

here is the connection

"On Aug 10, 1914 Philip McDONALD died in North Battleford.

Around 1915 daughter Rose married Joseph Milton DOBIE (1875-1868) from Ontario who was living in the little railroad town of Paynton at the time, not far to the northwest of Bresaylor, Rose’s hometown. Joseph was the eldest son of Jane Augusta LAWSON and James DOBIE (1842-1904) who was born in Quebec."

Rose was my grandmother's sister and Don Dobie's mother.

here's more

"Around 1910 Joseph Milton DOBIE married Rose McDONALD from Bresaylor, daughter of Mary Ann COOK and Philip McDONALD (1833-1914). ** MORE ABOUT PHILIP McDONALD

Not long after they were married, Joseph and Rosie moved to Winnipeg (Manitoba) for a brief period. In the 1911 census they were recorded at 400 Talbot Avenue, Joseph as a Mechanic/ Machinist.

In 1912 their first child, Donald, was born. "
