Thanks Gary for creating the page. It is much appreciated and informative - there is some new information there that I had not yet uncovered.

I noticed a couple of small typos - "From 1913 until he retired, William was also referred to as a Canoe Builder.as well as a Master Trader. From 1814 to 1820 he was at Edmonton House; 1820-21 back at Acton House." The 1913 should be 1813. As well, when you refer to the birth of some of the children you reference 1902 to 1912 - again, that should be 18 not 19.

I haven't been on the website for awhile and I am very pleased that you created our family page. I hope to meet other descendants through it.

All the best,

Lorraine Bell

Hi Lorraine; nice to hear from you

Thanks for noting my errors. I have made the corrections.

Also note my new Link for James SINCLAIR: JAMES SINCLAIR (1811-1856)

Where do your ancestors fit into the scheme of things?

Hi Gary - I am descended from William and Isabella through Peter Flett and Euphemia Halcrow. Two of their daughters, Margaret and Elizabeth Sophia, were my great grandmothers. One was my grandfather's, Harry Bell (actually Vannerman but adopted by a Bell) mother (Margaret) and the other, Elizabeth Sophia Flett, was my grandmother's, Florence, mother. So I have a double line from the Fletts/Halcrow.

I am still trying to find the birth record of Harry/Henry Vannerman who became Harry Bell (my grandfather whose father I believe was Henri Vannerman who married Margaret Flett in 1871). I cannot find any existence of any record nor have I been able to discover where my great grandfather Vannerman was from or who his parents were. This is my biggest brick wall in my ancestry.

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Hi Gary,
I was reviewing the HBC Archives and the Kipling Collection and I agree with the HBC Archives. Catherine Flett is probably the daughter of Betsey and the other William Flett B or Juinor (1786- 1852). “Confused with William Flett A in Sprague and Frye, The Genealogy of the First Metis Nation.”

Name: Corrigal, James
Spouse: Flett, Catherine
Date of Marriage: 1834-02-11
Parish: St.John's Anglican Church, Winnipeg, Manitoba
Priest: William Cockran
Witnesses: Peter Corrigal, John Flett
Fonds: Kipling Collection
Reference: MG 25 G62
Finding Aid: FA-1368. Library and Archives Canada only has this index. The actual records are held at the Archives of the Diocese of Rupert's Land in Winnipeg. See Search Help for more information.

(Note: Witness, John Flett is probably her Brother)

I have also noticed in the both;
1) Saskatchewan and William Flett: Their Lives and Service in Present Day Alberta By
Wishart, Vernon R.
Academic journal article from Alberta History, Vol. 57, No. 2,
2) Fort, Flett and Family: A Journey into our Family Roots at Fort Edmonton, by Vernon R. Wishart and Shirley A Wishart.

Vernon Wishart states William Flett’s will leaves his monies in trust to “ his reputed wife Saskatchewan and their four children,” using Many Tender Ties, Sylvia Van Kirk 1980, p. 45 as a reference. Jane Flett (1785-1835) and Catherine Flett (Mar 5 1810-1901) were alive at the time of his death. Wouldn’t he have included them if they were his children too?

Another observation I noticed is, Isabella (no Betsy) Saskatchewan died at the age of 70 in 1845, which makes her year of birth 1775 (HBC archives) and, if so, she would be too young to be Jane Flett’s mother. Do you have another source for her year of birth?

Beth

Hi Beth and Gary,

I believe Beth is right - Catherine and Jane are not this William Flett and Isabella's Saskatchewan's children.

The HBC sheet appears to be correct.

Lorraine: Sprague & Frye lists Henri VANNERMAN born 1842 as the wife of Margaret FLETT b-1847 with no other information.

The Peter FLETT family is an interesting one, with lots of connections to other families in my collection. I have quite a bit of information on his family and will probably eventually feature a Family Page for him, but I have a very active Priority List these days and he is not on it currently.

More about that at this Link: SPECIAL FAMILY PAGES

Hi Gary - I have that information which is sparse. I have no idea where Henri Vannerman came from or who his parents were - I have looked through the available Manitoba censuses (including misspellings). According to my father, his grandfather was a Vannerman (although they spelled it Van Norman) not George Bell. One of these days something will surface.

Peter and Euphemia's family is extremely interesting. Many of the people from this line have done some interesting things and married into families that were successful or became successful and are highly educated.

I'll look forward to the page. And if you ever come across anything more about Henri Vannerman, please let me know!

All the best,

Lorraine

New Family Page: PETER FLETT (1812-1905)

I hope I will get some assistance there to determine exactly who were the children of John BALSILLIE and Annie FLETT?

Lorraine: I recently posted a New Page: JOHN ALFRED FLETT (1859-1943)

I think you deserve most of the credit for researching this family. I look forward to your comments and queries under that Topic.
