Red River Ancestry

It gets rather complicated, so I'll try to make it as short as possible. Rupert Smith and Harriet Brown had several children, but their youngest daughter, Kathleen Irene, became my grandmother. Kathleen was born Nov. 11, 1902 in Winnipeg. She married Charles William Edinborough on Feb. 25, 1919 in Winnipeg. Kathleen and Charles' second daughter, Winona Irene (1922-2004) became my mother. Kathleen Smith Edinborough died June 28, 1948 in Assiniboine Park. Winona Irene married my father, Achille Van Haute in 1941.

I'm also related to another descendant of William Robert Smith and Ann Omand Smith, but I'm not sure you want to hear that story as well. If you do, just let me know. I'll make that one as brief as possible as well.

Actually, Kathleen Irene Smith was born in 1903, not 1902. Sorry about that!

This is for Ken Lang, if you're still available. I have the Inkster series (Marnie from Manitoba), and I'd like more information about some of the family stories that are contained in the 2 books. Unfortunately, Marnie has passed, so I'm not sure who might have her records.

Would you happen to know who does?

Hi Barbara. This is Ken Lang.
I've read one of Marnie's books and used her as a source but I have no idea where her research material ended up. I know my mom donated money to the writing of a 3rd book. I hope her material landed/lands at the Manitoba Provincial Archives.

Yes I was on the Board of AHF, but that organization no longer exists. Federal funding concluded in 2014. I now serve as one of the writing judges for the Historica Dominica Aboriginal Writing Challenge.

I read your update on William Robert Smith's page last night. It was wonderful! The inclusion of information about WR Smith's participation in the Sayer trial, as well as the information about Benjamin Paul William Smith being arrested by the the Riel supporters, and then dying on the way home were both very important for both family and historians to understand.

I have also said that 'family history' is more than genealogical information about names, dates and locations. History is about 'people'.
