Beth Balsillie's posting of Oct 4: I knew after reading this page, I needed to visit the HBC archives again. A couple of years ago, when I first started building our family tree I noticed a lot of people connecting Jane Flett wife of James Sutherland, as a daughter of William Flett (1762-1823) and Saskatchewan, and others connecting Mary (Southward Indian) Halcrow, wife of Thomas Halcrow as a daughter of James Sutherland and Jane Flett. When I made all these connection the results is Peter Flett married his sister’s Granddaughter. I knew something was very wrong.

--------------------------------Anne Flett
-----------Peter Flett---------------&-----------------Euphemia Halcrow
William Flett & Saskatchewan----------------Thomas Halcrow & Mary Southward Indian Halcrow

Thank-you, Gary, for your analysis of Jane Flett’s Parentage, I totally concur. Now for the parentage of Mary, I am sure if Mary was the daughter of James and Jane Sutherland, Rev John West would have recorded it when he baptized her, but he didn’t and she isn’t. Rev John West did however show her a lot more respect than he did William Flett’s wife Saskatchewan. He wrote “Mary Halcrow A Southward Indian Woman, the Wife of Thomas Halcrow” instead of just “native”. (I can send you the image if you like.)
Now if you read the letter of Aug 8, 1831 from James Sutherland, it will make sense. His first daughter Sally and her husband Roderick McKenzie both died before 1830 leaving four daughters orphaned; Annabella, Margaret, JESSIE and Jemima. Now the problem is who is the second daughter that married in the summer of 1826? Did Nancy start a relationship with Robert Clouston before the official marriage or are we missing someone? Hmm… I am sorry, I forgot to check out the Sutherland baptisms.
James and Jane Sutherland are a very important part of Peter and Euphemia (Halcrow)Flett’s family. Not only did their daughter Isabella Flora Flett (1856-1932) marry the Sutherland’s grandson Roderick Kenneth Sutherland (1842-1909) but their granddaughter Mary Margaret Ackroyd (1873-1924) married another one of their grandsons Alfred William Sutherland (1864-1917).

Hi, my paternal great grandmother was Margaret Helen Halcrow, daughter of Joseph Halcrow and Mary Ann Corrigal. Joseph, son of Thomas Halcrow jr. and Charlotte Knight. Mary Ann's parents being James Corrigal 1810-1887-02-10(not to be confused w Catherine Flett's husband, obtained through SBHS),and Hannah/Harriet Anderson. I too have the same HBC document describing Thomas Halcrow the elder's wife as Mary a Southward Indian.
Could anyone enlighten me as to what exactly southward Indian refers to.
You mention an image of reverend John Smith's mention of Mary. I would more than love to see that!!!

Hi Beth,
I believe Mary Halcrow's origins were south of the Dakota's, hence the "Southward" in her baptism. I am also impressed with the lack of racism in the Reverend's description of her! I have posted the image it on Ancestry and have also sent it to Gary.

Thank you! Of course, i wasn't sure if it was to distinguish between southern and northern"Canada". That makes sense. My maternal grandmother spoke of being related to Sitting Bull. That could be the connection. Have nothing official to go on.
Yes, it's rather non racist for the reverend!

Sent Jan 23, 2015 as a ‘Report’ by GloryB (Beth):
Hello Gary it's Peter's wife who was Margaret a Southward Indian. I did see the discrepancy in the HBC archives. One thing I did notice was that the same day Peter and Christy/Christiana married, their son James was baptized June 5, 1823. My records show Margaret as being Peter's wife, James's mother. Perhaps they were the same person. James Corrigal married Hannah Anderson in 1829 and their daughter Mary Ann Corrigal b1845 married Joseph Halcrow 1837 11-16 - 1906 son of Thomas Halcrow the younger ( his parents: Thomas Hacrow the elder 1781-1856 and Mary a Southward Indian), and Charlotte nee Knight

Hi Gary
Could you please add the picture of the baptism record of Mary Halcrow from the HBC records, so anyone can judge for themselves who she is.
Thank-you,
Beth
