This is information I collected at the Manitoba Archives a couple of years ago.

I have a copy of James' HBC contract signed on 22 Mar 1792 for three years. Another contract was signed on 25 Jun 1798.
Both of these contracts are signed with an X.

Another HBC contract signed on 30 Apr 1833 by a James Folstter. As his age is not given, I do not know if this is the same man. In doing some research on the Folsters from Orkney, I was informed that they would have come from the Folsetter Farm and the name was probably changed by whoever wrote it on the contracts. Indeed, even this one that is signed has "James Folster" throughout it.

Four children were baptized on 5 Jan 1824. They were: Jenny, Margaret, John and Nelly.

I believe that James and Nancy had a daughter Jane abt 1814 who was buried at Red River Colony on 23 Sep 1824.
Death record HBCR# E.4/1b f300 recorded by D.J. Jones
The record does not give next of kin but she was recorded as being 10 years old.

James' son, William, was baptized on 23 July 1826 by Wm Cockran.

25 Oct 1827, James Folster and Jane an Indian woman from Saskatchewan were married by William Cockran, Asst Chaplain. John Bunn and John Folster were witnesses.

James' son, John, was buried at Red River on 28 March 1835.

The 1827 HBC Census lists James Folster age 55 married with 5 children and John Folster age 45 married no children.
The 1829 HBC Census lists James Folster age 57 married with 6 children and John Folster age 46 unmarried.
The 1830 HBC Census lists James Folster age 60 married with 6 children and John Folster age 40 married no children
The 1831 HBC Census lists James Folster age 58 married with 7 children and John Folster age 40 married no children
The 1832 HBC Census lists James Folster age 59 married with 7 children and John Folster age 41 married no children
The 1833 HBC Census lists James Folster age 60 married with 7 children and John Folster age 42 married no children
The 1835 HBC Census lists James Folster age 67 married with 5 children and John Folster age 65 married no children
The 1838 HBC Census lists James Folster age 54 married with 5 children and John Folster age 68 married no children

William Folster married Maria Pruden 28 Mar 1844 by Wm Cockran. Witnesses Peter Pruden and Peter Fidler.

Of interest, 21 Feb 1845, William Folster was a witness at the trial of Keetchepiewaipas for the murder of his wife by beating her head on the ice of the Red River at the place called Grand Rapids and drowning her. The man was found guilty and sentenced to six months in jail! The devil made him do it.
