ALEXANDER McLEOD SR (1798-1885)

Post by rossm » Sun Mar 16, 2014 5:38 pm

In 1810, Lord Selkirk appointed Miles Macdonnel as the first Governor of the new Red River Colony he was establishing. Macdonnel, born (1767) in Inverness, Scotland, had settled in Glengarry, Ont. Living in Glengarry about then too was Alexander McLeod Sr, also born in Inverness (1798). Alexander Sr, the great great great grandfather of Ross McLeod, probably never met Macdonnel, who was about 30 years his senior. Macdonnel sailed to England, then returned with the first group of settlers in 1811 too late for inland travel, and was forced to overwinter at York Factory on the coast of Hudson Bay. The Chief Factor there was William Hemmings Cook, the great great great great grandfather of Ross McLeod on his maternal side. The following summer the group traveled south to Red River. Appointed to assist them by surveying lots, roads and building sites was the Hudson's Bay Co. surveyor and mapmaker Peter Fidler. When Peter's great grandson (also named Peter Fidler) died in 1955, he was the next door neighbour of twelve year old Ross McLeod.

All of this must mean something, but darned if I can figure out what.

Ross: Is that paragraph your own composition or died you get it from somewhere else; if so, where?

Sorry, I’ve been away from researching this family for a while and when I did another review this morning by way of Ancestry.com, I find a lot of very confusing information.

I also noticed I haven’t posted anything on your Great-great Grandparents, Elizabeth SULLIVAN and Alexander McLEOD JR (1822-1894). Actually, that is where we should begin. We should get that generation straight before we go to Alex Sr. I will try to get something together to upload in the next day or so.

Hi Gary

It's my composition. I was re-reading the book "The Selkirk Settlement and the Settlers" by Charles N. Bell, published about 1887 and the connections suddenly came to me. It even has a layout skech of the HBC fort partly built by Peter Fidler in 1817 and located between what became (in 1887) McDermot and Notre Dame East near the Red River. Go to

https://archive.org/details/selkirksettlemen00belluoft

and click on "Read Online" on the left side. It's only about 40 pages long.

Hi Gary
Gordon McBean, on his My Heritage website, "They came through Ontario" shows the parents of Alexander McLEOD SR (born Jan. 26, 1798) to be William McLeod (born 1778, died Oct. 5, 1866, Glasgow, Scotland) and Janet Ross, of unknown origins, according to Scotland Births and Baptisms (1564-1950).
