This Hugh Gibson does exist, but it is not the Hugh Gibson of Isabel Gibson that married James Bird. In the Manitoba Archives there are two Hugh Gibsons married to Angelique Chailifoux. The first one Hugh Gibson (A) that is married to Ann Chalifoux daughter of Elizabeth COLLIN and Michel CHALIFOUX (1755-1833), a voyageur with the North West Company (later with HBC) BUT there is a Hugh Gibson (B) & this is my line. He was also married to an Angelique Chalifoux, but her father is Joseph Chalifoux. My Angelique was married by bannes by a HBC Chaplin, it states her father was also baptized by the same HBC Chaplin as an adult half bred. This is the 1847 daughter Isabella married James BIRD, son of Venus Rubina “Bennie” HAY & William BIRD (1803-1885). I have documents from the Manitoba Archives if you need. Leslie

This a really confusing family tree. It's not going to be easy to sort out. Sounds like fun. Can you highlight the evidence that there were 2 Ann's, to get us started?

I agree that there were 2 Hugh Gibson's in Red River, one married to Angelique Chalifoux and one to Christianna. Isabella Gibson Bird said her parents were Hugh and Ann Gibson in her Manitoba Affidavit in 1875. Are you suggesting that Christianna could have been known as Ann? I always thought Angelique was Ann. Pause for thought.

I knew I needed time to ponder this.
I had found this long time ago. I had found who Michel Chalifoux daughter Married Alexix Vivier. This is why my Angelique father was Joseph and not Michel.
Scrip affidavit for Vivier, Angélique; born: 1805; husband: Alexis Vivier; father: Michel Chalifoux (French Canadian); mother: Elizabeth Collin (Métis); claim no: 1508; scrip no: 10452; date of issue: September 20, 1876; amount: $160

From the 1870 Manitoba Census of St Andrew, I can confirm that Ann Gibson was Angelique Chalifoux (1800-1904). She was Metis, not an Indian woman. And she was the mother of Francis Gibson (male 1834) and Elizabeth Gibson (1852 -).
From the Manitoba Scripts the following claim to be children of Hugh and Ann Gibson (Metis):
  • Isabella Bird b jul 1829,
    Frances Hayes female b 1837
    Jane Falster b 1841
    Barbara Tulloch b 1843
I've started to move everything to paper to figure this out.
