I am very curious about his middle name "Finlayson". Do you know where he got his middle name. Was his father or mother related to HBC Post Master at Pic River, Long Lake and Mitchipicoten John Finlayson, s/o HBC Chief Factor Nicol Finlayson?

Could be.
Often a given middle name was the maiden name of the mother.
My husband's grandfather was David Greenhill Miller. (David's mother was Joanne Greenhill.)
