Smith and Pruden possible family relationship??

Post by copperp3 » Thu Apr 01, 2021 3:01 pm

York Factory Journal 1813 states that on September 28, "Smith a relation of Mr. Prudens came ashore". I have been trying to establish what the relationship was. Years after his arrival in Rupert's Land, William had related to his son Tom, that when he was still in England, on a holiday he had visited the Prudens. Peter Pruden had married the widow Margaret Fraser, nee Smith. Was Margaret related somehow to William Robert's father, William Sr.? Margaret's parents seem to be Samuel Smith and Margaret Mead. Margaret had a sibling born in 1751 named William. Could he be William Robert's grandfather? That would make Margaret William Robert's aunt and Peter his uncle by marriage. In 1848 William was invested with the office of Clerk of Court and Council of Assiniboia. Was Peter perhaps involved with William achieving this posting?? Who was William Robert's grandfather Smith??!!

W R was an HBC employee. they were given positions of authority to protect HBC interests. he was also proficient with the pen - not necessarily a common trait mid 1800’s.
