Hello Gary,
Is this the same John whose parents are Donald McDonald and Nancy Farquarson/Ferguson? I believe that they had a large family, Duncan Mcdonald being the oldest child and John the second child.

Hi Jamie: I have been puzzled by this myself because various sources present confusing and conflicting information. That John McDONALD, according to his Scrip affidavit was born Dec 27, 1827 in St Andrews, half-breed son of Nancy FERGUSON & “Little” Donald McDONALD (1797-1876) from Scotland.

According to my information so far, that John McDONALD b-1827 married Elizabeth ANDERSON, daughter of Jane TRUTHWAITE and James ANDERSON (1808-1896).

I see Elizabeth Anderson in my research but through the Truthwaite side but I didn't know who she married. I got the info about John from the same person who said Matthew Truthwaite ventured to Canada with a brother. I think I'll have to find her phone number and plan a visit with her...

I believe this John McDonald died 29 Nov 1912 in Winnipeg. Charlotte and his headstone in Find-a-grave, clearly shows he died 29 Nov 1912 at the age of 89. Manitoba Vital Stats show a John McDonald died on 29 Nov 1912 in Winnipeg at the age of 79. His birthdate is shown as 1822 in the 1870 Manitoba census, 1832 in the 1891 census, and Jul 1823 in the 1901, 1906, and 1911 Census.

Now the question is who was his father. The 1870 Manitoba census shows that his father was Donald McDonald born in Scotland. But, the notes on the census entry show he is absent from his residence, so someone else supplied the information. Where John McDonald was born may help figure out which Donald McDonald. The 1870 census say he was born in Manitoba, 1891 census says NWT, and the 1901, 1906, and 1911 census say Manitoba. The problem is the Red River Settlement Censuses don't show a Donald McDonald until 1828 (Little Donald Wife Nancy Ferguson) and 1835 (Big Donald wife Jean/Jane Beaudry) and both have sons of the appropriate age. We know that Big Donald had a son, John C McDonald, born 17 Jun 1825 at Edmonton House. John C McDonald married Nancy McDonald. It's not the same John and Big Donald is eliminated as the father of our John McDonald. From the Manitoba Affidavits, there is a John McDonald born 5 Jan 1817 in St Andrews to Donald McDonald 'little" and Nancy Ferguson. He signed the affidavit John McDonald D on 20 Aug 1877. Our John McDonald was called John (D) McDonald by the HBC and he was at Eagle's Nest when Rosalie was born. Little Donald McDonald arrived in Red River Settlement on 27 Oct 1812 as a member of the Lord Selkirk's colonists of 1812 and likely was in Manitoba (Swan River) when John D McDonald was born. This could be a match or were there other Donald McDonald's?
