Hi! I'm from Southern Ontario. My mother was born as a Tetroe.
Her father Alfred Tetroe was son of parents Joseph Tetroe and Harriet (nee Hurrell)'

I found lots of information that the family didn't know about since Harriet left Joseph and went to Ontario after her youngest child Alfred was born.
She is found in Ontario census as Hattie our Harriet. I don't know much more about her relationship with Joseph Tetroe or why she left him taking only Alfred and leaving the rest if the children. The question of whether Janet listed as Joseph wife in the census was Harriet using another name can be answered though. He must have remarried a Janet because Harriet was in Ontario with a gentleman with the last name Waterman, also from Manitoba.
Her son Alfred went by both Tetroe and Waterman.
Both Harriet and her son Alfred died in Ontario.

I have quite a bit about Joseph James TETROE (1886-1972) and his wife Harriet (Hattie) HURRELL.

You have me confused. What Ontario Census year are you referring to and under what surname?

Who is the Janet you are referring to as Joseph’s wife?

I have some information on the WATERMAN families from Selkirk but need more info to see which one you are referring to.
Regards, Gary

Off hand I am not sure what census I found Harriet although my mother knew her and said she was approx 11 yr old when Harriet died in Hamilton, Ontario around 1957.
She was listed as Hattie or Harriet
I found a marriage cert online, in Orillia, Ontario for Harriets parents William Henry Hurrell and Ester

Who did Alfred TETROE marry? Is he your maternal grandfather?

ALFRED TETROE was my maternal grandfather.

Alfred Tetroe married Edith Mary St.Pierre of Ontario early 1940's. Edith went by the name Helen and likely to have been born in Port Arthur, Ontario.

Alfred and Edith "Helen" Mary (nee St.Pierre) Tetroe issue;
3 living daughter's
And 1 living son (youngest)
all born in Welland, southern Ontario

All having issue including two sons and 2 grandsons carrying the Tetroe name here in Ontario

Alfred, known as Al, was a non smoker. He had asthma and died in his 40s from severe heredity emphysema approx 1973. Said to be buried in Niagara on The Lake, Ontario

Edith aka Helen lost her hearing having Scarlet Fever at 12yrs of age. At that time you'd be expelled due to disability from school unjustly. At some point she found she was able to benefit from using a hearing aid.
She educated herself and worked on the Great Lakes boats as a chief cook after raising the children. She died Aug 2, 1996 after a brave fight with cancer in Welland, Ontario.

Thanks Suzanne – I have a pretty good handle on your Manitoba ancestors but very little regarding your McDonald ancestors or the Ontario families other than what you already have.

I have lots of information about the family of Esther COX and William Henry HURRELL (b-1861) and I often do Special Family Pages for people who make donations if you’re interested. More about that at this link:

Can anyone give a reference to the birth date and parentge of Joseph Tetroe in 1849 and the marriage of that Joseph Tetroe to Josephine Lemay? Re Josephine's marriage: the transcript I have from the St Boniface Archives of the register entry at La Paroisse de St Norbert for Josephine Lemay's 8 July 1879 marriage gives the groom as Joseph Tetreau with mother Hélène Desforges and un-named father.
The bio in Red River Ancestry says she married Joseph Tetroe born 15 July 1849 of Isaac Tetroe & Lydia Shephard. but the only primary srce I can locate is for a birth of a "Tetro" no first name to Issac Tetro & Lydia 4 Nov 1846 on p.30 of the report of births in the town of Hinsdale during the Year preceeding May 1 1847 and this fits with the 1960 US census entry on p.150 for Washington, Berkshire MA for 40 yo Issac & Lydia Tetro with a 14 yo Joseph Tetro. And this Joseph Tetro is almost certainly the 20 yo Joseph Tetro of Isaih Tetro & Lydia Sheapard who is married 12 Nov 1865 at Hinsdale to Julia Ostrander (a 22 yo b.1843 Pittsfield of Henry of Sally Green). They had a son Joseph born 1866 who died in 1867. Did Joseph & Julia separate before his immigration in 1872 or are we talking about different people?
