An intriguing addiction

Post by Kur10u5 » Mon Sep 26, 2016 1:00 am

Gary, my sincere thanks for creating this incredible site. I had been trying to trace my ancestors through census information without a great deal of sucess. However, once I made allowances for discrepancies in the stories handed down to me by my father, which he had been told by his grandmother, everything fell into place when I came to this site and jigsawed information from ancestry.ca and censuses. Without this site, I couldn't have put everything together, and for that I am truly, eternally grateful. I have self-identified as Metis for over 30 years, but there was always a part of me that wondered if I was an imposter. I am so happy to have made this journey of self-discovery and to have "found" my ancestors. Thank you so much for this wonderful site and all the work that must go into it. If I could start a new career, I think I'd be a genealogist! Sincerely, a descendant of James Sutherland b. ca 1785 and Nancy Cook b. 1785, and Jean Baptiste Chartrand b. 1810 and Louise Stevens. :D

Interesting Kim!
Please tell us more about how your lineage connects to these people (SUTHERLAND and/or CHARTRAND).
Who were your grandparents, great-grandparents, etc.?

Ok, let's see if I can keep this brief
I am related to Chartrands thusly:
my father, William Apps, b. 1934 Prince Albert Sk is the son of Elvina (nee Gonneville/Gunnville) b. 1909 and Dudley Dennis Apps b. 1912 (in England, I believe.
Elvina was the daughter of Louise Larocque. b. 1888 Duck Lake Sk and William Gonneville/Gunnville) b. 1885 or 1887 at Carlton.
Louise Larocque was the daughter of Louise Chartrand b. 1854 (most likely in the Red River Settlement) and Jean Baptiste Larocque b. 1840 (most likely in RRS, as well)
Louise Chartrand was the daughter ofJean Baptiste Chartrand b. 1810 and Louise Stevens b. 1820

I ran into a snag as I was verifying information such as birthdates, and I realized it was highly unlikely my maternal grandfather, who was only 40 when he was hit and killed in 1940 by a drunk driver (who in turn was defended in court by John Diefenbaker and was acquitted of whatever charges had been laid against him), could not possibly have been the same man I was tracing, as his birthdate was 1861. My grandfather's date of birth was 1900. So, back to the drawing board I go.

Hi, Gary,
I got the all my birthdates and places of birth and so on all figured out, so here's how I'm related to the Sutherlands:
My mother was born Marjory Dolores McLennan b. 1940, daughter of Eva Gertrude Turner b. 1903 and William McLennan b. 1900 (I found him in the 1901 Census. His dob matches with that on his gravestone.) His father, whom I shall call William Senior, b. ca 1861-1864, was enumerated in census district No. 11 Selkirk, MB. Senior's wife was Alice Kirton b. ca 1876. William Senior's father was Murdock McLennan, whose wife was Ann Margaret Sutherland (b. ca 1832).

I'm taking all of the information I've gathered and I'm turning it into a family history book, along with whatever old photos I can find, and that's what members of my family will be getting from me for Christmas this year. I'm 58, from the era where family meant first, second, third cousins, by-marriage cousins, and favoured friends. I'm afraid the younger people in my family will not know or care about their family history, so I hope my creation will stir them to evaluate more closely what "family" means to them.

Thanks Kim. Based on your information I can see that I have your lineages well documented in my files but have not done Pages for some of them yet. Some of your ancestors are already featured at these links:
Your maternal great-great grandparents:
MURDOCH McLENNAN (1825-1916)

Your paternal great-great grandparents:
PHILIP TURNER (1839-1919)

If you have any other particular family(s) that you would like to also have featured on my website, please note that I frequently do so for people who make donations. More about that at this link:

Very interesting. Baptiste Chartrand and Louise Stevens were my great great grandparents...therefore; I believe we share some roots!
