Michel LIZOTTE was born Oct 6, 1818 in St Michel (Trois Riviere), Yamaska County, Quebec, son of Agathe NADEAU & Peter Nicholas LIZOTTE (born around 1780 in Yamaska), the youngest of four sons. He received his education at "Las du Loup", Quebec. Surname variations: LIZZOTTE, LISSOTTE, LISOTTE

 

In 1836 Michel came from Quebec to Fort Vermilion on the Peace River.

On Mar 21, 1843, Michel began his career with the HBC as a Middleman (Voyageur) and Winterer in the Athabasca District (Northern Alberta), along the Peace River of the north.

From 1850 to 1856 Michel worked out of Fort Chipewyan.

 

On Oct 16, 1850 Michel married Sophie TOURANGEAU at Fort Chipewyan, daughter of Marie VALNET and Jean Baptiste TOURANGEAU.

From 1856 to 1860 he worked out of Fort Vermilion.

From 1860 to 1865 he was back at Fort Chipewyan.

In 1865 Michel was posted back to Fort Vermilion where he remained the rest of his life.

On July 1, 1867 the British colonies in North America were united under the British North American Act to become the Dominion of CanadaSir John A MACDONALD (1815-1891) was appointed as Canada’s first Prime Minister; a month later he won the first federal election. William McDOUGALL (1822-1905) became the Minister of Public Works, and he begannegotiations to acquire Rupert’s Land from the HBC.

 

It was around 1867 that daughter Madeleine married Thomas James SMITH at Fort Vermilion, the son of Nancy FAVEL and John James SMITH (1791-1850), a retired Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) trader born in England.

In 1875 daughter Marie married John LAMBERT at Fort Vermilion, son of Isabelle DUCHARME and Thomas LAMBERT (1823-1902), another Metis HBC voyageur.

In 1879 son Michel Jr. married Julie LAMOUREAUX at Fort Vermilion. Her origins are uncertain.

 

In 1880 son Jean married Julie MERCREDI at Fort Chipewyan, daughter of Charlotte and Abraham MERCREDIE (b-1824), an HBC voyageur.

 

Census of 1881 at Red River Post (east of Fort Vermilion): Michel LIZOTTE, age 64; wife Sophie, age 48. Children: Adelaide (age 18), Christine (16), Felicite (14), Elise (12), Rose (10), Pierre (8), Augustin (6) and Joseph (age 4). Also son Michel Jr. (age 23) and his wife Julie (age 18).

 

In 1885 daughter Felicite married William Robert SMITH at Fort Vermilion, son of Mary BIRD and William Robert SMITH SR (1833-1919).

 

In 1888 Michel was listed as a “freeman” (retired; no longer an HBC employee).

 

Census of 1891 at Fort Vermilion: Michel LIZZOTTE, age 72; wife Sophie, age 60. Children: Adeline (age 28), Eliza (22), Rose (20), Pierre (18), Aug. (16) and Joseph (age 14).

In 1891 daughter Liza married Augustus Peter Warren CLARKE at Fort Vermilion, son of Jane BELL and Lawrence CLARKE (1831-1890).

 

In 1893 son Pierre married his sister-in-law, Isabelle SMITH at Fort Vermilion, daughter of Mary BIRD and William Robert SMITH SR (1833-1919).

 

In 1895 son Michel Jr. married a second time to Marguerite CHARLADE at Fort Vermilion, daughter of Marie SAKOW-I-A and Atate CHARLADE (a Beaver Indian).


Also in 1895 son Augustin married Marie LAFERTYat Fort Vermilion, daughter of Sophie BEAULIEU and Modest LAFERTY (1851-1893).

 

In 1898 son Joseph married his sister-in-law, Elizabeth LAVERTY in Fort Vermilion, daughter of Sophie BEAULIEU and Modest LAFERTY (1851-1893).

 

Census of 1901 at Fort Vermilion: Michel LIZOTTE, age 79; wife - ? - , age 68. Children: Adeline (age 31) and Rose (age 30). Granddaughter Maria (age 9).

Census of 1906 in Fort Vermilion: Michel LIZOTTE, age 84; wife Sophie, age 73. Children: Madeline (age 35) and Rose (age 33). In same household are daughter Mary (age 35), her husband John LAMBERT (aged 55) and their children.

On Aug 28, 1920 Sophie (nee TOURANGEAU) LIZOTTE died in Fort Vermilion.
