Census 1901, 1906:  Alex (age 18, 25) and his brothers are living with their mother and step-father, Cornelius IRVINE, in Selkirk.

In 1912 Sandy began a relationship with Flora (nee KENNEDY)-LAMBERT, who was previously married to Andrew George LAMBERT. On Feb 15, 1915, they were church-wed in St Clements. Flora was the daughter of Catherine TRAVERSE and Alexander KENNEDY (1872-1951).  ** MORE ABOUT ALEXANDER KENNEDY

 

Census of 1916; Eveline Street in Selkirk: Alex SAYER, age 32, a Government Dredge worker; wife Florence, age 25. Children: Russell (age 3) and George (age 4 months).

 

Grand Marais
1921

 

Census of 1921 in Grand Marais (17-18-7-Epm): Alexander SAYER, age 44; wife Flora, age 30. Children: Russell (age 7), George (5), Valentine (3) and Gertrude (age 2).

 

In 1938 son George married Violet CARVER, daughter of Margaret ROSS and William CARVER (b-1875).

 

World War II
1939-1945

 

On Sept 4, 1939 Canada and Britain declared war on Germany, beginning World War II. Almost immediately new recruits began pouring into Winnipeg to sign up with the Winnipeg Grenadiers and the Royal Rifles of Canada.

 

Sons Russell, Valentine and Montgomery enlisted and served over-seas.

 

In 1941 daughter Emma married s soldier, William James SKENE (1910-1944) who was born in Scotland. In 1944 he died in a Hong Kong Prisoner of War camp.

 

On May 7, 1945 Germany surrendered and the War in Europe ended; the next day, May 8, was declared VE Day.

 

In 1945 daughter Lillian gave birth to Gordon Dellis SAYER, out of wedlock (his father unknown). The 1996 obituary of William DROBOT (1920-1996) indicates he was survived by his foster son, Gordon SAYER. In 1945 DROBOT returned from War (WWII) to marry Jean STARODUB (1917-2013). ** If anyone can explain all this, please let us know on the Forum.

 

In 1947 son Valentine returned with his war-bride, Cecilia GRAY.

 

On Oct 4, 1948 Alexander SAYER died. He was buried in the St Peters Cemetery.

 

Youngest daughter Flora Bella married Clifford BROWN, son of Margaret HOURIE and Archibald BROWN (b-1876).

 

On Mar 16, 1988 Flora (nee KENNEDY) SAYER died in Selkirk. She was buried next to her son Valentine in St Peters.
