William Richard SUTHERLAND was born Dec 8, 1833, in St Andrews Parish, son of half-breed Elizabeth CALDER & James SUTHERLAND (1803-1844) from Scotland, a Lord SELKIRK Settler. ** MORE ABOUT JAMES SUTHERLAND

 

Richard's father (James) died at the young age of 39; Richard was only 11 yrs old. His mother (Elizabeth nee CALDER) re-married to Cuthbert CUMMINGS (1825-1896).

On July 1, 1867 the British colonies in North America were united under the British North American Act to become the Dominion of CanadaSir John A MACDONALD (1815-1891) was appointed as Canada’s first Prime Minister. William McDOUGALL (1822-1905) became the Minister of Public Works, and he began negotiations to acquire Rupert’s Land from the HBC; surveyors were sent to Red River to prepare the way for an expected influx of settlers.

 

On Oct 11, 1869, Louis RIEL (1844-1885) placed his foot on the surveyors’ chain to tell them their work was finished! This marked the beginning of the historic Red River Métis Rebellion.

 

On July 15, 1870 the Rebellion ended when RIEL’s Provisional Government accepted the terms of the Manitoba Act and Manitoba became the fifth province of Canada.

 

Census of 1870 in St Andrews Parish (Lot 38): William Richard SUTHERLAND, age 37; wife Margaret, age 44. Children: George (age 9), Mary (7), John (6) and Ann (age 3). River Lot 38 was located on Lamberts Point (See map below)

In 1875 Margaret claimed her Scrip (as husband of William R SUTHERLAND).

 

Census of 1881 in St Andrews Parish: William Richard SUTHERLAND, Deputy Sheriff, age 46; wife Margaret, age 53. Children: George (age 18), Mary (17), John Richard (15), Ann Isabella (12), William Colin (10) and Elizabeth Jane (age 4).

 

In 1884 eldest son George married Annie LEASK at the Old St Andrews Church on the Red River, daughter of Mary Ann MOAR and John William LEASK (1821-1903) from the Orkneys of Scotland.

In 1887 daughter Isabella married Alexander “Big Alex” SETTER in St Andrews, the son of Jane MORWICK & James SETTER (1810-1857).

 

In 1889 son John married Margaret BROWN in St Andrews, the daughter of Jane SCOTT & Thomas Henry BROWN (1839-1914)

Census of 1891 in St Andrews Parish: William SUTHERLAND, Stock Raiser; age 57; wife Margaret, age 64. Children at home: William Colin(age  20) and Victoria (age 14).

 

In 1897 daughter Victoria married John (Jack) PATON in Portage la Prairie, son of Jennet and Hugh PATON who was born 1832 in Scotland.

 

In 1898 youngest son Colin married Catherine TAYLOR in St Andrews, daughter of Mary BIRSTON and William McKay TAYLOR (1848-1926).

 

Census of 1901 in St Andrews: William SUTHERLAND, age 67; wife Margaret, age 73.

 

On Dec 14, 1904 Margaret (nee INKSTER) SUTHERLAND died at St Andrews. In her obituary it indicates that she was survived by three sons and two daughters: George T SUTHERLAND of Clandeboye; John R SUTHERLAND of Pigeon Bluff; W.C. SUTHERLAND of St Andrews; Mary, wife of William LEASK; and Isabella, wife of Mr SETTER of Clandeboye.

 

On Nov 15, 1906 William Richard SUTHERLAND died in St Andrews.

 

In 1916 eldest daughter Mary married her brother-in-law William LEASK at St John’s Cathedral in Winnipeg, son of Mary Ann MOAR and John William LEASK (1820-1903) from the Orkneys of Scotland.
