ROBERT WILLIAM TAIT/ TATE (1856-1922) (Last Updated: December 24, 2016)
Robert William TAIT or TATE was born Mar 10, 1854 or 1856 in Manitoba, the son of Catherine CUMMINGS and William TAIT (1827-1863). He was a grandson of Mary BEAR and William TAIT SR (1792-1863).

In 1863 Robert’s father, William TAIT) died in St Clements Parish (Mapleton) and his mother (Catherine) remarried to Thomas PEEBLES, son of Nancy (Indian) and William PEEBLES (1812-1883).

Canadian Confederation
On July 1, 1867 the British colonies in North America were united under the British North American Act to become the Dominion of Canada. Sir John A MACDONALD (1815-1891) was appointed as Canada’s first Prime Minister. William McDOUGALL (1822-1905) became the Minister of Public Works, and he began negotiations to acquire Rupert’s Land from the HBC; surveyors were sent to Red River to prepare the way for an expected influx of settlers.
On Oct 11, 1869, Louis RIEL (1844-1885) placed his foot on the surveyors’ chain to tell them their work was finished! This marked the beginning of the historic Red River Métis Rebellion.
On July 15, 1870 the Rebellion ended when RIEL’s Provisional Government accepted the terms of the Manitoba Act and Manitoba became the fifth province of Canada.

Robert marries Martha FOULDS and moves to Saskatchewan
Around 1883 Robert married Martha FOULDS in St James Parish (Winnipeg), daughter of Anne Nancy ADAMS & John FOULDS (1830-1903).
Census of 1891 in Red Deer Hill, SK: Robert TAIT, age 35; wife Martha, age 28. Children: Frances (age 7), Aurora (3) and baby Annie (age 9 months).
Census of 1901 in Red Deer Hill, SK: Robert TAIT, age 45; wife Martha, age 38. Children: Frances (age 17), Avora (13), Annie (10), Maud (8), Christie (4) and William (age 2).
In 1904 daughter Frances married Donald McDONALD in St Clements (Mapleton, MB), son of Sarah SETTER & John McDONALD (1834-1880).
Census of 1906 in McDowall district, SK: Robert TAIT, age 50; wife Martha, age 43. Children: Aurora (age 28), Winnie (22), Annie (15), Maud (12), Fred (10), Christie (8), Robert (6), Ruby (3) and Gerta (age 1). ** Macdowall is located to the SW of Red Deer Hill.
Around 1910 daughter Aurora married George Allan MOBERLY, son of Francoise LAFLEUR and Henry John MOBERLY (1835-1931).
Census of 1911 in McDowall district, SK: Robert TAIT, age 55; wife Martha, age 48. Children: Annie (age 20), Maud (18), Fred (15), Christina (14), Robert (12), Rubina (8) and Gwendoline (age 6).
In 1912 daughter Annie married Arthur George TAIT at the home of her parents, son of Caroline SPENCER and George William TAIT of uncertain origins.
Census of 1916 in McDowall district, SK: Robert TAIT, age 60; wife Martha, age 53. Children: Fred (age 20), Christie (19), Bert (17) and Rubie (age 13).
Around 1921 son Fred married Ellen CHRISTIANSON, daughter of Clara OLESDOTTER SOLLIEN and Carl Johan
Census of 1916 in McDowall district, SK: Robert William TAIT, age 65; wife Martha, age 52. Children: Robert William (age 22) and Ethel Rubina (age 18). Daughter Aurora Evelyn (age 22) and her husband George Allan MOBERLY, Merchant, age 42, and their children: Frances May Evelyn MOBERLY (age 12), Henry John (age 9), Edna Verena Evelyn (6) and baby Robert William MOBERLY (age 8 months).
