I think you’re right Beth, but that means Sprague & Frye has yet another error in its listings as follows:

Sprague & Frye ID-4034 Table 1: Cornelius PRUDEN, Métis, born 1839 in NWT, DADSID-4035 (William PRUDEN b-1804). Wife: Isabella McKENZIE, Metis, born 1846 in USA.

Gary
Back in the day, Sprague & Frye were trying to do the impossible, using the info hidden in all the archives to build families without being able to use a computer to double cross ALL the entries. They did a stupendous job of getting most of it right, but there are a few things they would find very difficult to solve. Most families like to repeat the same name and some distant members just happen to be born about the same time, with that same name, maybe even marrying someone with the same surname and having children with similar names. You are an expert on the Fidlers. I believe I have done a good job with the Prudens and “my” Fletts .
I am constantly reviewing everything and finding more things I missed! Beth

Hi Gary, New Hic-up! I have been researching and researching John Pruden born to William Pruden & Nancy in 1838 over and over , coming to a very surprising conclusion! It is like the John Prodom and Bethey Slater’s family in the 1870 Manitoba census disappeared of the face of this earth.
What I have found is John Pruden born 1938 very happily married to Ellen (Laterrgrasse?) daughter of Nancy Daniel and Baptiste (Latergrasse?). They did a lot traveling from Red River to the Battlefords of Saskatchewan to North Dakota and then Montana. This is a true love story, one moment they are married 35 years and the next 50 years. Any ideas how to figure this one out? Beth

Hi Beth: I seem to have the John PRUDEN who married Ellen LATTERGRASS as born 1854, son of Betsy SLATER and John PRUDEN SR (born 1838).

In 1876 Ellen LATTERGRASS claimed Scrip in St Andrews as the wife of John PRUDEN.

That’s the hiccup. There is no room in the time line for both John Pruden’s to be father and son. I have been following the John Pruden born in 1838. [Scrip affidavit for Pruden, John; born: 1838; father: Wm. Pruden; mother: Nancy Campbell; claim no: 2532; scrip no: 12114; date of issue: April 16, 1871; amount: $160 = Digital]. He is the one married to Ellen Laterrgrasse. I also followed this John Pruden to St Anthony Minnesota in 1857, claiming the age of 24 (really 19). This John Pruden maintained his age though most of his life.
The John Pruden listed in the 1870 Census is born in 1854. That’s a very big difference in age. He could not be a labouror at the age of 7-3 by himself in Minnesota claiming to be 24 years old!
[Scrip affidavit for Pruden, Ellen; born: 1856; husband: John Pruden; father: Baptiste La Terrgrass; mother: Nancy Daniel; claim no: 2533; scrip no: 12115; date of issue: April 16, 1877; amount: $160]. I believe at the time she had no clue to how old she was and the year of birth was supplied by the persons filling out the scrip on her behalf. Remember she marked it with an X. She does maintain she was born between 1841 and 1842 later in life. She is found with John Pruden from 1881 and on.

Gary: For what it's worth, here is what I have. Old J.P. Pruden had several children, amongst them William (Born 1804) and Cornelius (Born 1822). William (1804) married Marie Nancy Henry (Born 1810). Amongst their children were Cornelius (Born 1834) who married Jane Rowland (Born 1849), and another son John (Born 1838) who married Betsy Slater (Born 1840). John and Betsy had a son John (Born 1854) who married Ellen Lattergrasse (Born 1856). Now, back to old J.P. Pruden. His son Cornelius (Born 1822) was the Cornelius who married Isabelle McKenzie (Born 1825). Like I said, "For what it's worth". Regards to all Pruden cousins......................Barry.

Thanks Barry. Actually, I have all of that, but as you can imagine there’s a lot of stuff I haven’t featured yet. I have a Priority List that keeps me very busy.

Hi Guys
My theory is this, John Pruden (1820) married to Bethsy Sletter is the son of William Pruden (1804- 1843) and an unknown mother before he married Nancy Henry Campbell. I believe he and Bethsy chose to live on the reserves and not apply for scrip. This would explain all the First Nations Pruden’s I am unable to connect to the family tree. I was able to follow John Pruden (1838)’s life though the ancestry records and know he only had one wife named Ellen. I also made an interesting discovery while researching the 1870 Manitoba Census, John and Bethsy’s neighbour, William Pruden (1833-1914) claimed his father’s name was Edw Prudent. This means we can officially rename Peter Pruden (1870-1889) ‘Peter Edward Pruden’
