Chris: The England Census of 1901 reveals that your grandmother, Louise RUSSELL (b-c1873), a ‘Day School Teacher’ and her brother, James RUSSELL (b-c1872), Ella’s father, were both children of John RUSSELL (born c1831 in Manchester, England), a 70 year old ‘Velvet Finisher’ who was widowed at the time. I have updated the DICKINSON Page to show Ella’s parents.

Census records for 1911 and 1916 indicate that Ella immigrated with her parents (Mary & James) to Canada (Winnipeg) either in 1908 or 1910 (different years given in each census). With them came James’ sister named Sarah RUSSELL (born 1872-74) who is not identified as such in the 1901 England census. Do you know anything about Sarah?

Hi,
Many thanks indeed for your info about James Russell and family emigrating to Winnipeg. I've been looking for Sarah , not realising that she too was in Canada. In the 1901 Census she is called Tilla. The Russell family comprised of four girls and four boys;Jane , Lydia , Louisa, Sarah, John,Hiram,Robert and James. My grandmother died in 1947 and at the time she was writing to her brother ( Henry?) in Trail, BC. No correspondence exists thus my ignorance! Louisa's husband , Frank Cecil Johnson, came to Canada circa 1912 with Louisa's niece , Lydia Winifred Venables , and they had several children in Quebec. I'm in touch with one of their descendants. Dad never had anything to do with his father and was brought up by his Russell family, especially by his uncle Rob. in Barry , S.Wales.

Any further revelations of the Canadian Russells would be much appreciated.

Looking forward to your reply , Chris

David Shantz Posted: My name is David Hugh Shantz, born October 19, 1942. I am the only child of Marvel May Dickinson (daughter of George Stanley Dickinson and Jessie Galloway, both of Selkirk, MB) and Harold Hugh Shantz. I married Betty Anne Ciastko in Winnipeg, MB on April 15, 1976, and we have three children, Susan Elizabeth (b 1977), Michael (b 1980) and Christopher (b1983). In 1982, we moved from Winnipeg to Denver, CO as part of a corporate relocation by Great-West Life Assurance Co. (I was an actuary with Great-West Life, until my retirement in 2007). Our children now live in Houston, New York City and Savannah respectively. Susan is married with 3 children ages 1,3 and 5. Christopher is also married.

We were surprised and fascinated by your account of the illicit affair between George Stanley Dickinson and Sarah Lambert, resulting in the birth of Tena Irene (subsequently adopted by the Moore family)of which we had no knowledge. How did this information finally come to light, as we were not aware about it within the family (or it was a very well kept secret)? We are particularly anxious to learn if there are "step-cousins" still around in the Winnipeg or the Selkirk area that might be about the same age as me, my children and/or my grandchildren. Through this website, we are aware of Eldred Thomas, daughter of Tena Irene, and her marriage to Gary Still, and of their son, Adam (m. Carissa), who has two children (Easton and Nixon), and their other son, Chris. Do Patricia Thomas and Norman Pruden also have children? What about Alvin Thomas and Debbie S.? Also, what about the three children of Tena Irene's by her previous marriage to Steve Zelisko --- Doug, Grace and Jim. Do you know if any of them have children and/or grandchildren and their whereabouts?

We will be in Manitoba in late July, 2013 as we still have a cottage at Victoria Beach that we visit each summer, so might possibly be able to make contact with some of these long lost relatives while there. I look forward to obtaining any additional background information you may have on the relationship between George Stanley Dickinson and Sarah Lambert, and on the existence and whereabouts of the descendants of Tena Irene.

Welcome to the Forum David!

I am Gary STILL, moderator of this website. Irene (DICKINSON) MOORE-THOMAS was my mother-in-law who provided me with enough clues for me to trace her ancestry by further research of my own.

If you follow the links provided in each Family Page you should be able to find the information you are interested in. If you have further questions about the different families, please post replies under the preset Forum Topics provided in each, using the < post reply > buttons. All of the families you mentioned have separate pages and forum topics, including DICKINSON, THOMAS, PRUDEN, STILL, ZELISKO, etc, etc.
