James BALLENDINE was born in February of 1839 in St Andrews Parish, son of Fanny LEWIS and James BALLENDINE SR (1807-1864), an HBC voyageur.

Canadian Confederation
On July 1, 1867 the British colonies in North America were united under the British North American Act to become the Dominion of Canada. Sir John A MACDONALD (1815-1891) was appointed as Canada’s first Prime Minister. William McDOUGALL (1822-1905) became the Minister of Public Works, and he began negotiations to acquire Rupert’s Land from the HBC; surveyors were sent to Red River to prepare the way for an expected influx of settlers.
On Oct 11, 1869, Louis RIEL (1844-1885) placed his foot on the surveyors’ chain to tell them their work was finished! This marked the beginning of the historic Red River Métis Rebellion.
On July 15, 1870 the Rebellion ended when RIEL’s Provisional Government accepted the terms of the Manitoba Act and Manitoba became the fifth province of Canada.
Census of 1870 in St Andrews Parish: James BALLANDINE, age 33; wife Marianne, age 33 and daughter Isabella (age 3). On Apr 21, 1873 Mary Anne (nee NORQUAY) BALLENDINE died in St Andrews.
Marriage to Jane HOURIE
On Jan 11, 1875 James re-married to Jane HOURIE in St Andrews, daughter of Ellen COOK and George HOURIE (1825-1875).
On July 20 and July 21, 1875 (two separate claims) James BALLENDINE of St Andrews Parish claimed Scrip for children of his deceased wife, Mary Ann NORQUQAY: Isabella Frances, and William James and Emma Jane (both died in infancy). Also on July 21, Jane HOURIE claimed Scrip as James’ wife.
Census of 1881 in St Paul Parish: James BALLENDINE, age 41; wife Jane, age 27. Children: Isabella (age 14), George (5) and Mary Ann (age 4). Also in the household is 50 year old Elizabeth HOURIE (Jane's aunt).
In 1884 eldest daughter Isabella married George KNIGHT in Winnipeg, son of Sophia BIRD & John KNIGHT (1830-1890).
Census of-1901 in St Andrews: James BALLENDINE, age 62; wife is Jane, age 54. Children: Mary Ann (age 24), Fred (20), Alex (16) and Eliza (age 13). Grandchildren: Elizabeth KNIGHT, (age 13) and Edward KNIGHT (age 12). Brother Adolphus BALLENDINE (age 60) and nephew, John H BALLENDINE (age 16).
In 1902 daughter Mary Ann married Samuel Charles SUTHERLAND (1878-1959) in Winnipeg.
Census of 1906 in St Andrews: James, age 68, wife Jane, age 50. Children: Fred (age 25), Eliza (18) and Alex (age 21). Granddaughter Elizabeth KNIGHT.
In 1907 youngest daughter Eliza married Angus Cornelius FIDLER in St Andrews, son of Carrie McLEOD and Andrew FIDLER (1853-1941).
Census of 1911 in St Andrews West (Rossdale area): James BALLENDINE, age 72; wife Jane, age 58. Children: Fred (age 27) and Alexander (age 23). Also daughter Ann SUTHERLAND, age 31 (b-1880).
In 1912 son Alexander married Catherine KNIGHT in St Andrews, daughter of Mary Ellen MILLER and George KNIGHT (1860-1942).
Census of 1916 in Hodgson: James BALLENDINE), age 78; wife Jane, age3 63. Son Fred, age 34.
On Jun 28, 1918 James BALLENDINE died in St Andrews Parish at the age of 79 (Vital Stats).
